John was starving. His stomach roared at him as he walked past the bakery. He hadn’t eaten anything in two days. “I have to eat something,” he thought to himself. John reached into his pocket and pulled out his wallet. By the weight he could tell it was empty but John opened it anyway; empty. He then caught a glimpse of the picture of his mom that he always kept with him. Things were definitely difficult before she passed, but they had gotten a lot worse since. His stomach growled again. John remembered the words of his beloved mother, “Sometimes we have to be the bad guy to survive.” “There is a small convenience store down the road that would be easy to take from,” he realized. John started towards the store. As he got closer and closer he started to second guess himself but the deep pains of hunger were too intense to ignore. John opened the door and spotted an area in the back where he could easily stuff a few items in his pockets and not be noticed. John took a couple of bags of chips and put them in his pockets just as a police officer stumbled out of the bathroom right next to John and noticed what he was doing. As John saw the officer he took off towards the door. “Someone stop that guy!” the officer yelled as John sprinted out the door. As John left the building he could hear the officer calling on his radio for backup. Out of all the officers in Salt Lake City, John had to run into the fastest one; just his luck. He ducked into an alley but the cop was right on his tail. As he exited the alley, John found two police cars with four more officers waiting for him. It was over; he was caught. The officers loaded John into one of the cars and drove off. John knew that he wouldn’t get very much time for shoplifting but finding a job with a criminal record is a lot harder. They got to the station, got him booked and put him in a cell he had all to himself until the next day when he will be moved. John sat down on his cot. It was by far the comfiest thing he has slept on in a very long time. The officer then brought him his meal. It was small but it was still food. After he had finished his meal, John looked around: food, a bed, shelter. Maybe jail was better than living on the streets. John laid down on his bed and fell asleep. John awoke to the sound of gunfire. He quickly jumped up surveyed the holding cells. He saw nothing until he observed the police officer just outside his cell lying on the ground. “Maybe he’s unconscious,” john thought. “Hey, hey officer,” John called to him. The officer started to move. “What’s going on,” asked John. The officer then slowly turned his head, revealing a frightening sight. The officer had blood all over his face, his eyes were completely pale, and he started growling and crawling towards John’s cell. John backed up as the monster stuck his arms through the gaps in between the bars, trying to claw at him. John noticed the gun still holstered at its hip. He carefully reached through and grabbed the gun. John aimed the weapon and fired three shots into its chest. The beast didn’t even flinch. John fired one shot into its head which then rendered it motionless. John tapped its arm a couple of times with his foot, nothing. John then noticed the keys still attached to the belt of the officer. John grabbed the keys, walked over to the door, unlocked it and walked out. John searched the rest of the police station. He found more of these creatures that the officers seemed to turn into. At first John tried to sneak past all of them but there were soon too many. He started to take them out. John learned very quickly that the only way to stop these things is to shoot them in the head. Body shots have no effect on them. John made his way to the main lobby of the station. A very large desk was pushed in front of the door as if to keep something out. John didn’t want to know what was outside so he just left the desk there and continued to search the rest of the building. John found the armory, full of rifles, machine guns, ammunition and many different kinds of grenades. John found a backpack and filled it with as many supplies as he could. He found a flashlight, some flares and a hammer that he also took. John threw the pack over his shoulder and continued his search. John stumbled upon an unopened door that was still locked. John pulled out his keychain and tried five keys before one of them worked. John pulled the door open, revealing a staircase to another door at the top. John ascended the stairs and opened the door at the top, roof access. He walked over to the edge of the roof and looked onto the streets of downtown Salt Lake. There were tons of those monsters everywhere. “The police station is sealed from the inside and it has many supplies. Maybe I should stay here and wait for someone to come for me,” John pondered. That’s when he heard a noise that made his hair stand on end: a blood-curdling female scream from the office building to his left!
