The Island

Day Thirty-Two, food supplies are well stocked. Our shelter is holding up better now that Anthony reinforced the roof with palm fronds as opposed to the banana leaves we were using before. We still haven’t heard anything from the mainland. We did, however, see a cargo plane pass over early this morning... I screamed at Katie and John to try and get the pilots attention but we were unsuccessful.

“We’re never going to get off this damn island” sighed Katie a voice which used to be filled with happiness and joy, a voice that was forever lost with her husband John. Trying to get back on track I begin to assign everyone their daily tasks

“Anthony you will be working on improving the shelter, John you will…”

“Yeah yeah, I know I will be collecting supplies and helping Anthony all day, just like I do every day.”

You could tell he was irritated he was used to being the big boss and having everyone do his dirty work. But he was right I don't know why I make these lists, everyone has the same tasks every day, Anthony works on the shelter, John collects supplies for Anthony, Katie goes out to hunt and look for food and for me I provide cooked meals for the group which is nothing compared to the meals I used to make back at my restaurant. However unsalted burnt meat and mushrooms weren't half bad some nights. As everyone began to go on with their tasks I began to prepare for this afternoon's lunch. Just then John strolled around the bushes looking for food. I joking ask

“Welcome to Outback, What can I get you to eat?”

John smiled

“Can I please have the surf and turf, steak cooked  medium rare with a side of lemon butter broccoli and garlic mashed potatoes.”

As we all waited for our food to come out Mike, Katie’s husband started talking about this show the crew was performing later on in the evening. He suggested that we all get together this night and go. Despite my loving wife’s facial expression, I agreed that we would go with them.

“As anyone seen Anthony lately he said he would be at lunch,”

said Mike concerned.

“Last place I saw him was up in his room working on some new building design.”

Said, John, as he was stuffing his mouth with the last of the calamari. I don’t think I have ever seen John not eating, I would hate to end up stranded somewhere with him I don't think I would ever eat. Just then our food had arrived it smelled like fresh seafood and freshly steamed vegetables. John went to go dig in right away when he was abruptly stopped by Katie

“Shouldn't we pray first?”

She said disgustedly

John has never really believed in praying before meals but he would be respectful and let the rest of the group give thanks while he sat patiently and waited. Katie then bowed her head and began to pray.

“Dear Lord, please let me find food this trip and let me bring home a meal for the rest of the group so that we do not go hungry and please pray that Mike is doing well in Heaven…”

“How can you still pray after everything that has happened, are you not mad,” said John angrily.

“Maybe if you did we wouldn't be in this mess right now and Mike would still be alive”

you could hear the anger and rage driven behind her voice.

“Alrighty guys and we not fight and just get on with what needs to be done”

I said trying to defuse the situation. Katie and John both bolted away into different directions. The tension was building between the group, we would all fight over the simplest things, we needed to get off this island and we need to do it quick. As I finished up preparing for lunch I decided to go check up on how Anthony was doing, I would hate for him to miss another meal. I strutted around the beach beaching looking for Anthony, just then I spotted him at the edge of the beach collecting driftwood.

“Hey Anthony, will you be joining us for lunch this afternoon?”

“No, I think I am going to stay in my room and finish up”

Anthony muttered

I Don’t think I can remember a time where he actually sat back and enjoyed himself, after all, that is the reason his wife divorced him. I whole reason I invited him was to get his mind off the situation. In an attempt to have Anthony enjoy himself I asked if he would want to join us for tonight's show. He replied

“No thanks I have so much work to do and I don't have any time for silly shows”

“Well, if you change your mind let me know”

I said as I slowly closed the door to his room. I Began to walk down the hall of the when all of a sudden the ship jolted to the side knocking me against the wall and onto the floor. I rushed back to Anthony's room and swung open the door and yelled

“WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?”

To my surprise, he was sitting there doing his work as if nothing's has happened

“What do you mean? It was just a wave”

Anthony said confused. Just then water began to seep under the door of Anthony's room, me and Anthony both looked up and immediately began to run up to the upper deck. We reached the upper deck and found everyone running around aimlessly, we frantically started looking for Katie, John and the rest of the group. Just then I hear

“Steven, Anthony!”

It was Katie she was running out of the tree line waving her arms in the air.

“They’re here, they came for us!”

She said as she ran back into the trees. I and Anthony quickly followed to find a helicopter had landed on the beach and was here to evacuate us back to the mainland.

The author's comments:

I got inspired to write this story when I was playing sims castaway on the wii with my little brother. My main focus in this story was to flip flop between the crash of the ship and the rescue on the island while still seeing into some of characters lifes. I also attempted to build small conflicts and always leave you wondering. I also took a huge leap out of my comfort zone and tried to go more in depth with dialogue which I am not very good at.
