C.R Avery: Most Wanted
The light dimmed on that warm thursday night in a tucked away house deep in the amazon rainforest. The owner of the house,C.R. Avery, had just went to sleep thinking about about the year that had passed and another year of freedom from his old life. As the time on Avery's clock became 2:15 in the morning, a sudden bright light began shining through the bedroom door. A pounding noise became louder as the sound of men running up the stairs grew closer. Avery jumped up realizing what was happening and began running to his bathroom in hopes of escaping out of the window. The jump out of the window would likely injure him, but his determination to flee was forcing him out. Once he decided to jump he wasted no time and leaped into the dense bushes down below. As he stood up and assessed himself, he realized that he was not gravely hurt. He began to run. He ran as fast as possible while the lights from the helicopter shined down on him. Reaching his front gate made him think he was safe, however, at the last second a group of men grabbed him and everything went black.
Avery woke up in a dim room with one small window of light and a black concrete door with nail scratches in every direction. It took him less than a minute to realize where he was: he had been captured. Many hours passed until someone came in. A clean cut, bald man walked in with a black shirt and khakis on, he had a folder that was busting out the sides. He began speaking,
“You must know why you're here since you’ve been quiet as you’ve been sitting here, you might want to get used to it, you’re never gonna walk free again.”
That didn’t surprise him one bit, knowing what he's done. His business began when he was in his twenties. Hurting for cash, Avery began withdrawing small amounts or cash from his family members bank accounts without their knowledge. One day, while he was at the bank, a group of robbers came in and tried to open the vaults and take the money they needed. They completely failed, however Avery was intrigued and once they were freed he convinced them he could help them succeed in stealing the money. He created his underground business and once the first heist had been completed and the money they had wanted was in their possession, Avery decided to continue. Many years would pass until Avery decided to leave the country, as well as his family. Avery was placed on the FBI’s most wanted list late in the year 2016, after it was found that he had stole over ten billion dollars from the U.S government. He fled the country weeks after finding out he was on the list, which began to manhunt to locate him.
In a state prison in New Jersey, the state where Avery had grown up, he would be facing many interviews with FBI agents and his trial would begin in less than ten days. The man who first walked in when Avery had woken up was named Michael Smith, his main goal was to get as much information about Avery's business so they could prosecute him and sentenced him to life behind bars.
Michael began speaking
“what made you start partaking in this kind of activity, and I hope you know you can’t deny and say you haven’t. We have you on tapes everywhere”
“It was supposed to be a one time thing, however, the more money we stole the more exhilarating it became.” Avery confessed
“ I always thrived when it came to money, It made me feel powerful, something that I never had felt growing up.”
Michael began, “There's not much that will be able to change from your words, the crimes that you have commited can not be undone, and i’m letting you know that the judge will not be sympathetic. You will most likely spend the rest of you life in prison.”
With that, detective Michael left the room, leaving Avery alone with his emotions. Two days later, the trial of C.R Avery V. The United States began. The trial lasted less than three days and by the end, the jury unanimously decided to send Avery to a maximum security prison for life, with no possible chance of parole.
The ADX Florence prison, located in rural Colorado, was known to be one of the most high security and secluded prisons. Hundreds of acres of land hold the spot of the prison, where many never leave. When Avery arrived the silence was overwhelming. The metal fences shined in the sun that beamed down in the hot summer and the guard posts stuck out like trees in the rather bare surroundings. When he was taken out of the car that he traveled four hours in, the smell of the crisp air brought some strength back into his body, after he had been convinced it was gone forever. At the entrance checkpoint Avery was given his orange jumpsuit, in which he would wear until his final days. As he walked down the halls which were white but covered in multiple scuffs marks which turned the wall grey. He passed the cells of many convicted for much worse, like murder, brought back the fear he had in his heart. The thought of being here forever had started settling in as well as the sadness. Once at his cell, he walked into a room with a bed, toilet, and a small amount of sunlight. As the door shut, he stared at the black concrete door, he turned to look out the small window. The small view he had was of snowcap mountains, which seeing those gave him comfort and let him know that no matter what, he always had the mountains to look at for hope and peace, which he had not had in his life for many years.
