For Diminishing the Number of Gun Crimes in America in a Feasible and Effective Manner

In today's society, problems are more than abundant, but a prominent American issue is gun control. The USA is one of only three countries that protect the right to bear arms in their constitution, and it has proven to be quite an issue. As of June 2018, there have already been a whopping 154 mass shootings in the US this year alone. This number is huge compared to countries with gun control, such as England, that has an annual average of only 26 gun crimes throughout the country.

There is a lot of controversy around this subject, but I believe I have composed a valid solution to the issue. While some argue that we should eliminate guns completely, I believe that we should require guns for all citizens. Each household shall be required to have at least one firearm per person, and it should be carried on the person at all times.

Firstly, by doing this, fear will be instilled in the citizens who would usually participate in gun crime, as they will know that their victim will have just the same power that they do. Fear greatly affects our decision making and often prompts retreat instead of urging us to commit whatever act we are scared of. Secondly, the current consequences of first and second-degree murder are only jail time, and the death sentence is only enforced in cases of capital murder. If more criminals knew that their crimes would be more likely to result in their death, they may be more likely to think twice about following through with them. Thirdly, by providing all citizens with a firearm, it will eliminate more of those criminals who go through with their crimes despite the possible consequences. If the victim has a gun on hand, they may be able to attack their attacker before they get the chance to. This will strongly discourage the attacker even further, if not eliminate them entirely. This will greatly bring down the huge numbers of criminal shooters that currently reside in the U.S., as well as teach regular civilians to be alert at all times. Fourthly, it will satisfy the citizens of the USA who thinks that guns should still be legal. Our wonderful and qualified current president, Donald Trump, especially does not want to make guns illegal, will be satisfied with this proposal too. Fifthly, United States citizens will feel much safer when out and about, or even in their homes. They will not have to worry about the thousands of un-incarcerated criminals roaming their neighbourhoods and streets, as they will be armed at all times and prepared for the worst. Sixthly, the numbers of mass shootings especially would be almost diminished entirely through strength in numbers. Who would win, the one original shooter, or hundreds of other Americans armed and ready for combat?

Some may say that this would only further encourage gun crime and that guns should still be eliminated entirely, but I strongly disagree. By eliminating guns, you would be tearing the sweet right to own a killing machine that Americans crave. How would they be able to sleep at night knowing that they couldn’t kill a man in one shot? Not only that, but it would give us one more thing in common with the Brits, which is the last thing we want. This is the land of the free, not the land of gun control. It would also not encourage gun violence, as people would learn that they would get what they deal out; you shoot, you get shot.

I believe that requiring every American to have a firearm of sort on their person at all times is a valid and feasible solution to the rapidly increasing issue of Gun control in America. There is no better way to contradict murder than more murder (but legal and justifiable murder, of course). Something needs to be done about gun violence in America, and I believe that this is the only way that it can be fixed. (686 words)

I came up with this idea, as I wanted to do something controversial, but not too horrifically offensive. I personally hate guns and I do think they should be banned entirely, so I thought it would be fun to see if I could think of something that contradicted that completely, and was so stupid, but that some people may still agree with (unfortunately). I also wanted to make this even further from being my point of view by writing it from the view of an American citizen. I’m in the US on a Visa, and I am originally Canadian/ English, so I wanted to do a very exaggerated American point of view. I think that the issue with guns in America is very important, and does need to be taken care of, but this is definitely not the way to go.
