Dear Zachary in 2020,

If I remember correctly, you just quarreled with grandma. She was so frugal that she insisted on reusing of disposable face-masks. I can reckon the anger burst in your body, seeking its way to make damage. You would be sorry for that in many days of your life. But at this moment when I look back, it is interesting that the wild ANGER seems to be covered by a feeling in romantic colors. I believe you must be very confused when you read here.

Do you remember the story of “killing the three warriors with two peaches”, which made you shocked when dad told you? Do you remember the theory of heaven-human induction? Do you remember the exquisite ancient formalities? Don’t you find all of the above so fossil-like that they are hardly comprehensible yet with mysterious romance, from the perspective of today’s people? Now we are at a similar situation.

The year 2020 witnessed many game-changing events, such as Covid-19 that swept the whole world, the African-American protest that rose serious violence, and the breakthrough development of brain-computer interface (BCI).

What will you find when you connect these three events? -- A world with more order and peace. Will you believe it?

The pandemic widens the physical distance among people to such a degree that face-to-face interaction is considered a kind of behavioral art appreciated by only a few. We are more accustomed to interacting with machines and thus are more willing to stay with them. Some wise men, sitting behind the powerful machines, realized that it is more effective to simply wipe out the violence of behavior than struggling to patch up the difference of thinking. Their eyes fell on BCI, which is already mature enough to make their idea happen. It calms people down, though not that naturally. It terminates violent actions. It can even recognize the biochemical elements which are the result of the reaction of human body to the negative information, and hence eliminate or transform them. From then on, we suffer no more agony that breaks hearts, no more depression that seems to last for centuries, and no more anger that harms and kills. To most of us, ANGER becomes the wreckage of the early savage that is only reserved in books, in pictures, in webpages, and in audio and video archive.

This is a perfect world! A beautiful, peaceful and civilized world! Although I have to admit that there are still some unfortunate who are unable to enjoy it. However, a greater number of companions are striving for it. We are confident that one day violence will be entirely eradicated, just like smallpox.

Recently my BCI system keeps reminding me of an upgrade. Probably it is because my feeling towards ANGER is too nostalgic, which is inappropriate. I know. I will have my upgrade tomorrow. As an upright and law-abiding citizen, I should protect this unblemished world from any danger or stain.

But why do I still feel a bit confused in a weird way? Why do I sometimes envy you who lived in the past in spite of myself? I am lost in thought.

Dear Zachary in 2020, before you have BCI implanted, if you can collect and preserve the details of original you/me and other savages, as many as possible, for me, an anthropologist, I will be grateful. With your help, I may be able to answer all the questions above. They have been haunting me for a long time. That’s why I am writing you this letter.

And I must do it today, because I have a strange prediction: if I don’t do it now, this letter is not likely to be written after the upgrade.

I am counting on you!

With love,

Zachary in 2030, before the BCI upgrade
