Breaking not in time
October 3, 2023
I was in the engineer’s seat, approaching the grade crossing.
A car snook past the crossing gate. There was nothing I could do.
All 500 tons of metal and electrical equipment in motion.
I quickly applied the brakes. Nothing was stopping this Union Pacific.
Not one car, not ten either. My brakes couldn’t save me.
