BRB ( Be Right Back )
Brb
A dark perilous day finally ended Josh thought to himself. “I don’t even know how I survived Algebra today; this new unit is killing me. Some mental relaxation could really ease my mind from the rough day. From night to day Josh gossiped and complained about all the work he was supposed to be doing, “How do you even do this, she never taught us that” Josh had barked. A simple reply back from CJ, “She did teach us this you dunce, it was taught when you had that great idea to go asleep.” Josh finally took the shame bestowed upon him, it was the truth and he had accepted it. “Well it’s not due until Friday so I’ll ask next time in class how to do this.” “You wouldn’t be in this predicament now if you just abided by my accusation, you should have just paid attention.” “Yeah, yeah whatever, I’ll still pass as I do every year, D ON A ROLL!” “Whatever you say…later.” CJ had logged off Skype and Josh had fallen asleep. Again.
The next day came with the bright white snow on the ground. School was called off due to the roads being shut down and this started what seemed to be a perfect day for Josh. Josh went to text CJ but then realized CJ had already said “No school no school!” With a smirk Josh didn’t reply and slowly went back to sleep.
What seemed to be moments later Josh was awoken by several texts from CJ, saying this, “Hey slacker better get that homework done, but first you probably need to wake up knowing how much you sleep in on snow days. As for me I’m going to enjoy my Thursday off with no stress from my homework, ta-ta!” Josh rolled his eyes and then attempted to go to sleep once more.
Once again what seemed to be seconds later he was awoken by his mother making him get up. This hadn’t been on the list for his Thursday off. Josh stared at his mother looking at her lips move but no words came out until she saw he was fully awake. “Honey its 5 in the afternoon you need to be out having fun not in a bed!” Josh gave her a menacing stare until finally he said “okay, okay I’ll go do something.”
Of course what Josh really did was go to the arcade and watch kids play games. He wished he had a bit of money for today but unfortunately he didn’t. Josh hung low for a few hours watching kid’s waste money on useless claw machines and silly games like dance, dance revolution. For 3 hours he had watched the same game played over and over again, he almost dozed off but then was forced to leave by the manager.
Once Josh got home it was 8:30 sharp, he had to get in the shower and “do his” homework. He sighed and got the shower out of the way, and then stared at the wall for the next ten minutes. Thinking what to do, he supposed he would see what CJ was up to enjoying his “perfect” Thursday. The loading for Skype today took absurdly long and bored Josh. Almost tempted to walk away finally it had loaded. Thankfully CJ was online saving him from his boredom and he started the conversation from there. “How’s your perfect Thursday going?” “Ehh just an average day really, I thought it would be a lot more fun but without friends to spend it with it was really boring.” “I understand what you mean it was really boring; I hope school is out tomorrow because I didn’t do my homework.” “Still? You little slacker, you’re going to end up failing this semester if you don’t get that act together.” “You sound like my mom geese, sleeping might be a better option than this.” “Oh okay I won’t badger you about it but you know I’m just worried that you might fail.” “It’s fine I’ll pass just you wait and see.” “Well I have to go to bed best in luck Josh.” “You too CJ, good night.”
Hours later I was awoken once more, geese how many times can you be woken up in one day? It was CJ once again who had decided to text him, what had been so important that he would text me at this time? But it was necessary the text read “Nooooo School! Wake up, wake up, wake up! We’re going to pull an all-nighter!”
Somewhat boggled Josh replied “What’s up?” “Ha-ha I know you could get up!” “Yeah not the most comfortable bed anyways. So what’s with you wanting to do an all-nighter? That just isn’t like you CJ.” “Well I was pretty bored so I decided we could stay up and talk.” “Seems fair enough” Josh had said. “You’re so lucky it’s like someone is on your side deciding whether we’ll have school or not!” “What do you mean?” “I’m talking about how you’ve just pushed right through the assignment not even doing it. It’s kind of like someone is trying to say ‘hey slacker get that done!’ “Just luck I guess.” From there on the conversation escalated into the dark and snowy night.
Hours later Josh finally managed the nerve to make a pause in the conversation. “I have to go to the bathroom, I’ll BRB. “Ok.” CJ Replied. Josh walked slowly towards the bathroom door but then he noticed a light outside the window. It had seemed to be headlights in the driveway. His heart slowly crept to a faster pace but then jumped when he saw a man slam the door. Who was this and what did he want? What was Josh to do?
Josh in all the things he could of chosen to do he stared outside watching the man. What had he intended to do? Was he going to kill Josh? He gulped and thought of other possibilities. Logical nonviolent ones that is. The man began to open the backseat of his car grabbing something. It seemed to be…. Josh sank down in all doubt he had he saw it with his own eyes. The man had a gun and was marching straight towards the house.
Josh thought to race upstairs and alert his mother, that would do no good… what could he do? What was going to happen if he didn’t tell his mother? How would he stop this man…? The blank question went straight down into the void of his mind, as soon as he heard windows break. The man must have broken through the window in the living room. Moments later I heard my mother scream with a fate no one would ever be able to tell. His mother had been killed. Gun shots flew through the house in loud commotion. Josh fell to his knees sobbing enough to where it was silent. In his mind he had lost all hope for life. He had lost the will to live. His mother was dead; he had nothing to live for.
After silence more dead than a graveyard, Josh finally heard a feint nose from his room. It had been his phone. CJ must have been worried why it was taking him so long to do this business. He had every right to be worried since there was a murderous man on a rampage in my house. Footsteps from above with a sinister feel vibrated through Joshes ear drums. Creaky floor boards from above with a slow walk down the steps teased his ears with fear. What was he to do if the man found him? He could revolt back and come swinging. Maybe he could run away and get help from a neighbor. What a stupid Idea Josh thought no one would be awake at this time. The man had a large muscular fit body from what he could see from what he saw in the night shadows. The footsteps were coming closer, closer, and closer. Until they had stopped. Right in front of the door. There was only a piece of wood between a 14 year old boy, and a murderer.
What seemed to be the longest time had only been seconds. Until another refreshing sound came. It had been his phone once more, followed by the sound of footsteps approaching the direction of what he could remember through all the shadows and tears, to be his bedroom. Minutes later he had a loud thud and stomps on the ground. He’d clearly broke the phone and read everything. This meant he knew he was in the house. This meant Josh was dead.
All cry’s he held back he had silently laid his head on the door and let all the streams of tears come out. The man turned around and the footsteps continued. For the longest time he stood in the doorway for the longest time. Josh heard the man’s breathing. Exhale, inhale, exhale, inhale. Josh was tempted to breath but he couldn’t he had to be as quiet as he could. He couldn’t give away his location. The footsteps continued to the living room. Then he heard the main door close. The madness was over.
After an hour of waiting he finally decided it was “safe” to come out. He quickly went into his room to see what had been done. His prediction was correct his phone was in pieces on the floor. Not useable Josh went into the living room. Window shattered into pieces bullets on the ground. A corpse of the one he loved the most on the floor to finish it off. Josh fell to his knees in deep pain. A pain that couldn’t be cut with a knife, shot by a gun or penetrated by the strongest strikes. He’d given up all hope and his life. Josh fell down crying on his face. He felt a grip on his ankle and quickly rolled.
It was his mother. “Mom… Why… why did this happen? ”sweetie… I don’t have much time left. Use my phone to call the police.” Josh said nothing and called 911. A Woman answered “This is 9-11 what your emergency is.” “A BROKE INTO OUR HOUSE AND SHOT MY MOTHER!” Josh had screamed but the connection was very dim. The call was canceled out and Josh was forced back into the pain of seeing his mother’s face. “Mom…” “Shhh there isn’t much time. I’m very proud to of raised such an excellent boy. You’re very bright even though your friend is right, you are a slacker… but I will always love you.” “I love you to mom.” “Don’t spend your life in grief like I did. I’ve waited this day ever since your father was killed. We moved state to state trying to get away from them. But they finally found us..” “Who is it Mom? Who?” “A mob we owe money to… we needed the money to raise you, feed you..” “Mom… I’m so proud to be your son.. I love you..” “I…Lo..ve..yo..u.” Those were the last words she said. She past their right in Joshes arms.
Josh had gone next door regarding of what he had thought earlier and awoke the neighbors. They called 9-1-1 and the body was taken, and Josh was taken to his grandmothers. He had told her everything that had happened and what he had experienced. Throughout the whole story his grandmother sobbed. Josh knew she would miss her daughter as he would miss his mom. “I’m so proud of you Josh. Now get some sleep.” She hugged Josh and he somehow managed to sleep through the night.
The funeral was held on January 19th of 2015. Everyone from his class had shown up. Even teachers showed up for the terrible event. CJ and Josh met eye to eye. “I.. I’m so sorry this happened… I can’t imagine what you went through that night..” “It’ll be alright. My mom went peacefully she died saying she loved me. If the murder is ever found or not, I’ll never hold grief. I made that promise to my mom at her very deathbed.” CJ looked down at her. “You might not hold any grief. But I do. I will make it my goal to take the man down who did this.” Josh looked at CJ with confusion. “For my one true friend, I will hold this as a goal.” Josh looked at him. “Thanks but no thanks. You don’t need to devote your life to fixing mine. Besides it wouldn’t help much. Thank you for such a generous offer, your one of the most considering people I’ve ever met. Thank you CJ. By the way, I think I might just do that Homework tonight.” Josh had smiled for the first time in a long time. He felt happy, and glad that he had such a great friend. This experience will forever change his life. For the better or for the worse. Neither the way he intended to keep the promise to his mom. He chose to prepare his life. He chose to make it better. He chose to succeed.
