Broken Tradition
Katy McGrath stepped out of her family car ."I really don’t want to do this" she thought
“Mom...”
“Katy you promised me “
“I know but”
“No buts get in there”
“Fine” she signed. She made my way into the grey building. She decided to take the stairs it would tack longer to get up there then the elevator. Katy entered a big pink painted room. There was about fifteen chairs made into a circle. She took a seat and watched other people enter. After about five minutes of watching, the woman who organised this entered .
“Hello everybody I’m Karen” she literally sung.
“Hello Karen” all the people attending the meeting chorused back.
“Let’s get stated John would you like to go first” she suggested gestering to a boy near the door
“Hi I’m John”
“Hi John so what’s your story” she asked gently
And so he told his story, this happened with five other people before me.
“Hi I believe your new?” she asked looking at me
“Ya hi I’m Katy”
“Hi Katy”
“So Katy would you like to tell us your story?”
“Um ya sure a this is it I guess” she said nervously
She began to talk..........
“I shot straight up in my bed. I jumped out of my bed (which is usually hard it’s just sooooo comfy) and grabbed some clothes. I had just remembered as I drifted off to sleep.
“No, no please tell me I’m not late I hoped as I got changed. I looked at my alarm clock. 02:40A.M.How could I be so careless. Jenna would be waiting for me at her mother’s grave in twenty minutes. Jenna reminded me about it twice that day and plus we had done it ever since we were fourteen .Jenna’s Mom died of cancer at 03:00A.M. On the 16th of July. The next year Jenna had called me crying, begging me to meet her at her mom’s grave. So we did and year after year we met up at the graveyard. My parents never noticed me sneaking out or maybe they did and just let it slip by .This one time (or four but who’s counting?)But either way we always did it. I can’t believe I almost forgot about it because I got tired after texting Josh until 01:A.M. Suddenly I heard a minion laugh(which was my ringtone for Josh).I looked at the clock it read 02:50A.M.
It only takes five minutes to get to the graveyard I thought before answering the phone.”
“Hi Josh, don’t you know what time it is?” I said pretending to be cross.
“I know, I know but I just had to hear your voice” he said sweetly
We talked like this for twenty minutes until I noticed the time.03:10A.M.
“Crap” I yelled straight into the phone.
“What are you okay?”Josh asked.
“I’m sorry I have to go” I said and hanged up the phon . I ran out the door and into the car. I slamed on the breaks when I saw it. Jenna’s car was banged up against an abanded cottage, the car a blaze. I called 911. I saw Jenna but it was too late the fire had-
She stopped mid sentence. She wiped away a tear and continued her story.
The fire had already enflared her. When the guards found me I was a sobbing mess. Later that morning the cops questioned me but I wasn’t really there. I was in a daze. I kept thinking she would just jump out of nowhere . Laughing her head off. Saying I can’t believe you believed me . I locked myself in my room for two days straight. A few days later I found out she was drunk and that was the main reason she crashed. . The counseller suggested this support group and my Mam made me go so....That’s my story.” she finished speaking
Everybody was quiet for a while but that happened to everyone.
“And how do you angry? Sad? Guilty?” Karen asked
She kinda straightened up on that word
“Ah guilty?” Karen said softly noticing the movement
“I guess so if I were there she would still be here” she said getting a bit annoyed with her.
“You don’t know that “she said trying to tell her she understood.
“How do you know “ She shouted at her she ran out of the room this time using the elevater . She sank to the floor weeping her eyes out
“I’m sorry Jenna , I’m so so sorry. She sobbed up to the sky.
