The day i met Ernesto
I always walked down the same streets for work. The same boring streets. They were so dull, with no colors other than the different shades of brown bricks that the buildings were made of. As I rounded the color of one brick building I was greeted by the only convenience store in the area. I walked in and behind the counter was a man, of some type of Spanish descent. I asked him for a powerball ticket and a mega millions ticket.
He chuckled and wouldn't even give me a glance. He stood up and grabbed the tickets for me and passed them to me saying, "nobody wins on these things in this state ever, miss, so you're just wasting your money. Plus, with those diamonds, you look like you've already followed some leprechaun to the end of the rainbow and found your pot of gold so why try for more and not just be happy with what you have?" With that said he let his baby blue orbs meet my confused brown eyes in an intense gaze.
I so do not look a million bucks, well, compared to him I guess I do, I mean I am doing pretty well in the financial area of my life. Before I could reply, my co- worker Ron, who's had a crush on me ever since we met calls me and asks me if I wanted to go to the new Italian restaurant with him on 5th ave. In the background, I hear the comment, "and there’s the leprechaun" which makes me more annoyed than I am willing to admit. I deny Ron for the third time this year and reply to the Spanish man with, "He's definitely not my leprechaun- whatever that means, and in life you win some and lose some, hence the game of life. You know what? I feel like being generous today. Since you say no one ever wins on these things I'll give you one of them." I hold up the megabucks and powerball tickets and he politely says that he can't accept this offer but I persuade him and he picks the mega bucks.
Thursday night the numbers were picked and of course, I lost. I’m currently having a weird sense of deja-vu because I feel like someone told me that I would lose this week… who was it? Ugh, I wish I could remember! Ehh why worry about it? I went into the kitchen to make my favorite hot Chocolate- Swiss Miss Caramel. I put the water into the kettle, turned it on high and let it boil. Wait a minute did I remember to take out the laundry? Hmmm, I grabbed the whipped cream and then went to the cupboard to get some marshmallows. I was just about to grab the marshmallows when I heard an annoying ringing noise cutting off the melodious voice of Scarlett Banner.
“Noooo! that was the best part!” I answer the phone with an irritated ‘Hello?” "Hey miss, I never did catch your name the other day but you'll never believe this, I won!" Who is this? "umm, that's great, but who is this?" Then the unknown person actually laughs at me, laughs at me! Wait a minute, I've heard this chuckle before. Oh my God is it..." You don't remember me? You let me choose a ticket that you bought and your leprechaun called you while you were in my store my store." What on earth is with this man and leprechauns? Wait a minute, how the h*** did he get my number? "Oh it's you! And Ron is not my leprechaun! Well congratulations on winning..."
What he said next really caught me off guard. "Ha, miss that guy is definitely your leprechaun, whether you know it or not. As long as he's not your lobster, I would like to take you out for dinner Friday night now that I'm a millionaire." Oh my god did he just ask me out? And my lobster? What does that mean? "My lobster?" "Lobsters mate for life, they're soulmates." "Oh well Ron is definitely not my lobster, but...umm, sure I'll go out with you on Friday for dinner. What is your name?" "That's great! I am Ernesto. And you?" "Cathy, with a C not a K, C." "well I'll see you Friday, Cathy with a C."
