Without Wings Chapter 2 -- A Maximum Ride Story
Fang's Perspective:
Where is she, I thought. I couldn’t believe that she hadn’t gotten out yet.
She’s getting closer, Angel thought. She wants us to come to her, though.
Why? I thought back. Wait, can you think back? Whatever.
I don’t know.
“Hey guys,” I said, “let’s go get Max.” Iggy and Gazzy cheered. Everyone jumped into the air and we took off, heading for the School.
Iggy said, “Wow, this is like de ja vu. Except, we’re going to save Max, not Angel.”
“I can hear her thoughts. She is really close, actually,” Angel said.
“Where? I don’t see her.”
“She isn’t flying. She’s … hitchhiking?” Everyone stared at Angel. She just shrugged.
Why is she hitchhiking? I thought. Angel told us that we should land. A few minutes later a semi raced by, and it screeched to a halt. Max climbed out, and we all raced toward her.
“Max!” everyone yelled. We all plowed into her at full speed, which was the equivalent of being hit by a freight train. A freight train with a bunch of wings, that is.
I waited for the love fest to pass, then I gave her an angry look. “Why didn’t you fly?” I asked her.
“I, um, wanted to take the scenic route.”
“From inside a semi?”
“Yeah.”
“Okay, now what’s the truth?”
She paused for a few seconds, then she sighed. “They took away my wings,” she said in a small voice.
Everyone’s jaw hit the floor, err, pavement. “Huh?”
“I can’t fly.”
“W-what happened?” Stop stammering! I thought to myself.
“The whitecoats must have done it. I escaped from the lab, but I think my ankle is sprained.” I suddenly noticed that the semi was still there. I waved the guy on, but he got out instead. He walked over to us, and I noticed that he looked familiar. Way too familiar.
“Guys,” I said. “I think Jeb is paying us a visit.” Max immediately did a 180 and started walking toward the semi driver (Jeb). Jeb noticed that she didn’t look very happy.
“Max,” he warned, “don’t do anything you might regret.”
Max just kept walking toward him. She said, “Don’t worry. I won’t regret this.” Jeb was out cold after the first punch.
