14 March 44 BC:
Caesar woke up this morning, and he then decided that he would ponder the meaning of life in his peristylium. He remembered that it was the 14th of March. Caesar thought that he recalled some important warning about the Ides of March, but he quickly dismissed that idea. Then, Caesar decided that he would take a walk to Brutus’s house but thought that he was most likely busy. So, Caesar decided to stay home and work on his speech for when he would be crowned emperor of Rome. He practiced his speech for hours so that it would be perfect for when he presented it to the Senate. When Caesar was finished practicing for the day, he had a wonderful meal of fish and dates that were prepared by his servants. Later that evening, the weather turned and became stormy with thunder and lighting. Caesar started to become concerned, so he sent his servant to the priests. Caesar hoped that the servant would bring him good news. Calpurnia then entered the room, and she begged Caesar not to leave the house because she feared he would be killed. However, Caesar told her that if he did not go to the Capitol in the morning, he would not be crowned king. Then, the servant came back from the augurers, and they told him that Caesar should stay home because the offering had no heart. Caesar believed that the priests had misconstrued the sign, and Caesar said that he would be a beast without a heart if he stayed home from the Senate. The sun began to rise, and it was now the Ides of March.
