Set, Go
Down” I opened my eyes, my body ready, my mind not. “Set” this was it. “Hut” the ball left the center's hands and went straight to the running back. I was the running back not my normal position but there I was. This was my first time playing running back. I took the ball and ran like my life was on the line and nearly got the first down, this was big. We were at the 40' yard line, it felt like the end zone was the other side of the world with only 3 minutes remaining and we were down by one field goal, only 3 points.
They were constantly feeding me the ball and with every yard I passed it felt like a mile on my world round trip. I was just moving the chains first down after first down I was almost there the taste of victory was on my tongue. This was it, this was a lineman's dream to score a touchdown. We were 10 yards away 10 quick yards from scoring, the last ten miles of my road trip. I was on fire. It felt like no one could stop me. I was like a Mac truck running over insects. This was it I was going to pursue the lineman dream I was going to win from my team.
Then I heard my coach scream from the sideline, “Hunter out Talon in”. I did not hear him that well so he repeated “Hunter out Talon in”.
It felt like someone took my soul from me, someone came into my house and stole everything. I couldn't believe it, I was heated. I could feel my face turn blood red. I turned to my coach in anger and sarcastically questioned, “What was the point in taking me out?”
He responded saying, “We want to let Roman score his first touchdown of the year because this is our last game.”
I didn't even look his way, I couldn't even respond that quote that sounded so stupid to me. I threw my helmet on the bench, I kicked my water bottle. My blood was boiling, I couldn't feel my face. I was as hot as a pepper. The fact that my coach took my chance away, I couldn't believe it. I was refusing to even look at the field, but out of the corner of my eye as the ball was snapped. Talon catches the snap and looks in the end zone. Roman was making a hard cut through the end zone, he got a little bit of space, Talon dropped back the game on the line and threw a bullet right into Romans hands. He caught it, he caught the game winning touchdown. Our team went crazy, everyone was celebrating my coach walked over and told me something I will never forget for the rest of my life.
He said, “Sometimes having good teamwork can beat some of the hardest fighting teams.”
Walking off the field with all those happy teammates made me smile, I was cooled off from the game. Then I saw Roman he was so happy, he won the game he did it. His face was priceless, I would pay anything in the world to experience that one more time. I was stubborn though I wanted to stay mad. But with all these teammates and coaches elated, I couldn't not be happy for him.
Back in the locker room everyone was celebrating and congratulating Roman, I also walked up to him and told him how that saved us and that was a great play. He then told me that “I couldn't have done it without you.” It was then in the locker room with the teammates that felt like family. Just knowing the fact that Roman appreciated what I did for him. I finally understood what my coach said, even though I did not win the game I helped one of my teammates to have the memory he would probably never forget. So I will never forget the time where Roman scored the game winning touchdown and I was the one who did that I gave him the opportunity to have the best feeling of a lifetime.
