Sobriety
I’ve walked these streets for the longest time now
Turned a corner here and found the sun just as blinding on this corner
My bare feet are getting dirtier and my skin darker
But my life has yet to begin
I met a woman with no name or hope
She said the world’s done her wrong and she’s out for revenge
She said only her next bottle of liquor doesn’t judge
It never calls her worthless, or throws her out; it’s her only source of love
I said to her not to fear, we can go for a walk
So begins our life
The woman and I walked along and met a man with no home
He said the world’s done him wrong and he’s out for sympathy
The only happiness he can find is in his syringe, where there’s no pain
It never leaves him and always keeps him warm on unforgiving streets
I said to him not to fear, we can go for a walk
So begins our life
The man with no home, the woman with no name and I walk along
We stare at the ground; the cigarette butts along the way are our breadcrumbs
They can lead us back to our old homes and lives if we want
But instead we’ll keep walking
Soon we come to the end of the street, here we find hope
There is a new life calling and we cry in answer
There is no need to be drunk or high around here
We have found sobriety, and we have never turned back down the same corners.
