Searching for the light
It was a snowy, dark night in Yukon Alaska, not a bit of light to be seen. Snowflakes sticking to my fur, I was the strongest wolf in the pack. I was a she wolf that was on the wanted list by many hunters. I was a leader of a wolf pack, which searched for more than just food and shelter. We were in search of “The Light”. “The Light” the humans travel the world to see, “The Light” they rave about. “The Light” they described as the most beautiful sight to see! That’s what we were searching for. I moved on toward the ominous forest ahead, the pack silently followed, leaving only leaving paw prints in the snow to be seen. We ran through the blizzardy darkness only being able to see a muzzle in front of us. There was much relief as we approached a grotto, a shelter to get away from this blinding snow. I signaled to the pack to rest, and we leave at dawn. It was my job to stand guard and that I will never rest until we are safe, and I can assure you that we are far away from our territory. I sighed, my hot breath against the cold night only left steam to be seen. The harsh blizzard mellowed down and the sky began to clear up. My ice blue eyes illuminated against the dusky sky, I rested my head on my paws. I looked up once more and saw a gleam of light sitting on the horizon. It was time to go. I gave a loud huff as we left our makeshift shelter. Danger. Danger was all around us. I sensed the presence of neighboring territories, many hostile toward unknown packs. Packs were not the only threat we feared, the greatest are hunters. Savaged humans killing animals for entertainment, we despise them greatly. We finally crossed the great arctic tundra as we approached a frozen lake. The ice with no ground, one wrong step could lead to death. I glanced at the pack; many looked tired but we must move on if we want to live. Hunters are following our trail, watching our every move I thought to myself. I ran, the rest of the pack followed me across the frozen ice, it crackling beneath our paws. I ran like I never ran before. I ran for my goal, my life. Solid land was in sight! The ice began breaking, it creeping up behind us like a shadow. I took my last step of unstable ice and lunged myself into the snow bank. Solid land! Most of the pack made it across but we were missing one. I looked back at the lake and saw the last member running towards us. Crack! We were all stunned as we saw the weak ice break beneath him. He was out of our sight within seconds as he fell into the water no sound could be heard. 1 was lost. I howled. The pack howled. Howled for the loss of the young male wolf. I walked toward the hills continuing our journey to the light, and I could sense that we were almost there. The pack headed up the hill behind me and we saw it. The bright lights dancing across the sky, we did not see the color the humans were speaking of, but it was still a beautiful sight to behold. We howled in pleasure as we finally reached our goal we have been chasing our whole lives. Bang! Bang! The howling faded. The last thing I remember was dropping to the snowy ground, looking at the light that was ahead of me.
