An Attainment of Innocence
Eve awoke with a grand smile on her face; her peachy skin was soft and orange; her strawberry red hair, knotted and large. Today was the day. Eve shoved the covers off of her, rushing to the window. Her husband Adam - his face was round like an apple, and his voice was crisp like one as well - was down near their car, already packing for their trip; Eve needed this trip more than ever. She plodded back to her bed, laid down on top of the ruffled sheets, and pondered her exhausting life. Her children were now adults, much older than even a college student, yet both still lived at home, constantly nagging for her to care to their excessive needs. Also, her job was hectic: she couldn’t remember the last day when she spent less than ten hours working, and even on the weekend, days were filled with at least six hours of work. Eve’s world was tiring.
Growing as a child, Eve never met her father and her mother walked out on her soon after; she learned how to be an adult much earlier than any child needed to. Her life had always be in an adult world - where sexuality was always present, where money, always a bother, where work, always necessary. Besides the few memories of her parents, Eve’s entire life had been on her own.
Adam’s story was similar; when his parents unfortunately died, he went to live with his drunk, jobless uncle. His childhood was quickly obstructed by the real world before he was merely six years old.
This vacation was evident and well needed.
Eve briskly gathered her belongings, rushed down into the car with Adam, and together, they drove off for the week. Their car ride was quick, and almost immediately upon arriving at their hotel, the couple agreed to take a hike in order to explore their current paradise. The hike was beautiful, but the two were unfazed; they hiked quickly and urgently as if they were trying to flee their past lives - the tactics seemed to work, for the stress of their lives at home were soon forgotten.
They eventually reached a fork in the road. One path was obviously part of the main trail, marked by footsteps and fatigue, but the other was untraveled, overgrown with branches and shadow. Adam and Eve quickly chose the unexplored path, driven by a sense of discovery. They walked in shade for a substantially long time until eventually the path became overgrown with brush and plants, and the two stopped to break. Eve reached into her pocket, mentioning that she wanted to just check an email on her phone, but Adam snatched it from her and placed it into their backpack. He then placed the backpack on the ground, stood up, and began searching through the overgrowth on the trail. He was trying to peer through, when, swiftly, he slipped straight through the branches, vanishing from the trail’s sight. Eve quickly jumped up, running after him and fell inside as well.
Dazed, Eve immediately cursed, for her clothes had ripped and Adam’s cheek was cut. It wasn’t until the couple began to register their surroundings, that they realized the true beauty of their environment.
The place was fairly small, about the size of a baseball diamond. The perimeter was surrounded by rows of tall bushes - tall enough that man could not see over it - that were covered in pink roses and dulled thorns. The ground was rowed with bushes painted with golden marigolds and violet tulips; the grass was lush and straight, as if freshly cut; most hypnotizing was the scent, which was warming and comforting, and flowed over them like a hot shower. Each plentiful flower appeared bright and large and dotted the ground like a giant bowl of candies. Growing in the middle of the garden was a large tree, godly in size. The two couldn’t see the top, but they were fixated upon its low hanging branches, branches that grew not flowers, but fruits - bright red fruits, larger than apples, but shaped like peaches.
The couple took off their shoes, sinking their rough toes into the cool grass, and walked toward the giant tree. They explored around the garden while sniffing the plants and becoming relaxed by the fragrance of the vibrant flowers and soft grass beneath their toes. Eventually they met to sit at the tree’s base and sighed.
The two sat in complete bliss, when Adam pointed out an object on the ground, not too far away. This object was long and curved, not too big but definitely moving toward them. Not until it was basically upon them was when they realized it was a snake. Eve screeched and pointed at the snake, but the snake remained stationary, unfazed from her yells. The couple figured the snake was harmless. Then, the snake spoke. Its words hissed low and like a whisper. Hassss you trieddd the fruit of the tree? The couple stared in astonishment at the snake, neither of them answering. You mussssst ttttry one. They are abssssolutley delicccccioussss. Each word from the snake was rhythmic and coaxing. All of Eve’s focus was upon the will of snake and her current urge to take one of the large fruits and place it in her mouth. Eve stood up and stepped toward the tree; the snake produced a wide grin. Eve reached out and ripped one of the fruit from the large tree. She sunk her teeth into it.
The flavor was magnificent. The inside was soft yet firm, and the juice, so rich and flavored - it flowed down her chin with each wonderful bite. Its skin was moist and its taste lingered on her tongue for a long time. Quickly Adam stood up, joining in, and both were quickly consuming the fruit. But now, the snake was gone, its intention fulfilled. The two continued to eat the desired fruit all afternoon, until they finally began to fill. Bitten cores surrounded the ground. The two laid down in complete euphoria; Adam took off his shirt, and Eve, her pants: The concern of appearance had dissipated. Eve tried to remember her past life, but only a fog produced. Soon, the two began eating again, but now the fruit was bitter and sour, and the acerbity tasted just like their childhood. Spitting it back out, they soon slid back into their previous joy.
Minutes in the garden became hours and hours became days, days filled with paradise, a paradise which consumed the lives of Adam and Eve, who were now quite naked yet utterly unaware. Not only did the two never eat the fruit again, but they also never left the protection of the garden and its tall godly tree. Eve, now innocent and naked, slept among the flowers; Adam, now exposed and calm, in the low hanging branches; the snake, with its sweet temptation, among the shadows; and God looked down upon them all.
