Quarterback
“Are you serious? I was going to take that!” I accused. Some jerk had just taken my parking spot which was right in front of the restaurant. I quickly stumbled out of my car. “What’s wrong with you?” I yelled at the man. He turned around with a puzzled face.
“Huh? I’m sorry what?” he replied. Apparently he claimed that he didn’t even see that I was about to take that spot. Frustrated, I just shook my head and got back into my car and went to find another parking spot.
The parking lot was so packed, I had to circle around twice. Finally I got a spot. I was going to Johnny Reef’s restaurant with my friends Benjamin, Chloe, and Brooklyn to celebrate my birthday. Then I saw them. I greeted BJ(Benjamin) and the others and thanked them for coming with me to celebrate my birthday and help me get out of my depression. My parents are considering divorce. On the other hand, thankfully we had reservations because the line went on even outside the restaurant. When we got in I was so excited to eat. I tried the one pound steak, large mashed potatoes, and two corn on the cobs challenge since it was my birthday. BJ wanted to do the same thing. When they brought out the food, it had to fill about ? of the table so BJ had to wait until I finished the challenge. “Holy that looks good!” I exclaimed as they set the timer.
“Jer-ome! Jer-ome!” my friends chanted as I was stuffing food in my mouth. When I got to the last corn on the cob, I was sure I couldn’t do it, but 2 minutes later it was gone. So full, I finished 7 minutes before the time limit, which was 35 minutes. “Free food for 2 months!” I yelled as BJ started eating. On the other hand, my other friend Chloe had a small plate of mac n’ cheese and BJ’s friend Brooklyn had salmon with rice. BJ almost completed the challenge, but he still had half of his corn on the cob left when time ran out.
I knew he couldn’t do it, I thought to myself with a big smirk on my face. Then, feeling guilty I said, “Good try man, don’t sweat it dude. You’ll do...better...next-,” apparently I passed out. I couldn’t really remember much after I saw that BJ had lost the challenge. But then I woke up to Chloe dumping cold water on me. We were outside of the restaurant in the parking lot. She told me I was out for about 10 minutes. Then, “BUUHHHHHH,” probably a world record burp came out of me. Chloe told me BJ was in the bathroom, probably throwing up because his stomach isn’t as tremendous as mine. I didn’t know where Brooklyn was though, probably awkwardly sitting on the benches waiting for us. Then after about 5 minutes BJ came out of the restaurant putting altoids in his mouth and we all drove to his house.
It was probably 8:30. Then BJ and Chloe went down the hallway. “Excuse us,” they both nervously said. I was just stealing food out the fridge when BJ and Chloe jumped out of the hallway and confetti flew everywhere.
“AAHHHH!” I screamed as I jumped up and dropped the salami. Then I heard a loud explosion which I assumed were just streamers, then I saw the balloons. Finally I realized that this was a surprise party for my birthday. For once I felt joyful for the first time in a week or so, since my friends actually remembered my birthday. I have been very depressed since my parents are considering divorce. We played video games and ate chocolate cake, which is my favorite. The whole gang all had a really great time. Then the fun had to end some time. At about 10:15 PM I went home, knowing I had an important football game tomorrow.
Waking up the next morning I was ready for the big game. It was the championship round for my football team. Good thing is, I was getting over my parents’ divorce pretty well. I would be living with my mom and my dad would move out next week. Breakfast was huge, it was 4 eggs, bacon, and 2 large sausages. I needed the energy. “Thanks mom!” I said as I closed the door to get on the bus.
“Sure thing,” she mumbled.
When I arrived, I saw BJ. He was in the finals on his basketball team. “See you later, good luck!” he said to me as I waved to him and entered the locker room. I went onto the field feeling happy and was confident that my team could win. The game had just started.
I was playing fantastically. I threw 6 touchdowns and 4th quarter was almost ending. But we were down 44 to 50. Then they scored a field goal. Soon I started to get worried. Our kick return was awful. The runner only ran 10 yards. We were 14 yards away from the end zone behind us. I decided to bomb it. “FADE! CORNER! CORNER! POST! HUT HUT HIKE!” I ordered as my teammate snapped the ball. I saw that my wide receiver Jake Bell was completely open. My arm immediately loaded and I threw it to him and he got 35 yards!
Then I decided that our runners should run a quick 10 yards, then we go for a touchdown. But then it was our last down and we only gained a couple yards. Our kicker kicked a 47 yard field goal. “That was incredible!” I cheered as he started walking back to the sidelines, cheering and wiping the beads of sweat off his forehead. Now the score was 47 to 53. We kicked it off. They got the ball but on the first play our best cornerback, Dominique Gotskowski intercepted the ball! 56 seconds left on the clock. We were 19 yards from the end zone! I stepped onto the field and I could feel that my heart was racing.
“686! 686! Ready...HIKE!” The ball snapped and I had it but I saw nobody open. My hands were wetting the ball because of the sweat. The defense was closing in, with 17 seconds on the clock, I saw somebody open and threw it with determination. I knew we would win, I thought to myself as I saw the receiver catch the ball and step into the endzone. “I knew we would win,” I said to myself again, this time aloud.
“Hey good job out there QB,” Jake praised me. I nodded and exited the locker room. Feeling happy, I went to see BJ but his game had already ended. Then I spotted him. He was already in his car driving home. I started walking over and he saw me.
“Hey JB I heard you won!” he exclaimed.
“Yeah we did! How about your team? Did you win? How are your parents?” I questioned.
“Yeah I made the last buzzer beater. I dunked on the other center! Oh and my parents are fine.”
“Cool,” I replied.
“Hey I’m glad you’re feeling better,” he awkwardly looked at the ground.
“Yeah, you too.” I replied, thinking about all the times BJ has been there for me.
Then we both went back to our cars and I waved to him as I pulled out of the parking lot almost tearing up. I didn’t if they were tears of joy or sadness, but I did know that I would be just fine living with my mom. I waved to BJ once more and drove home to live with my mom.
