True Love
Uh oh! Am I doing the right thing? What if she says no to me? Do I look okay? Dang it! I forgot deodorant! Oh well!
That was everything going to 14-year-old Frank as he approached the girl of his dreams, who coincidentally was the most popular girl in the 8th grade, Hazel Levesque. He had worked up his courage for the past 2 months to ask her to the final dance of the year. Well here goes nothing, Frank thought. He stylishly walked over to Hazel , where she and a group of friends were talking. Wait, I can’t do it now! If I get rejected, the whole school will know and I will be so embarrassed. I’ll wait a few minutes. But then she will be gone. Ugh! This is so hard. He continued his stylish walk as he approached the group.
“Hi Hazel . I was wondering if you would go to the dance this friday?” Frank sheepishly asked. He was in a awkward pose and and he waited there for an answer. He had practised that same thing a million times but somehow this time it sounded less confident and more like a little mouse squeaking. Did it sound less confident?
Hazel looked at him for a while then said, “Um, let me ask my friends.” as she turned around to the group of girls. To give her privacy and not seem like a some nervous freak that wanted to know right away, he took a step back and began to nervously tapped his foot. Drake, his best friend had said if she had said that, she didn’t think of him as a total dork and actually someone she wanted to go with. One of the girls in the group beckon him to come. Hazel emerged out of the group of girls and moved her hair out of her eyes.
8“ I would be flattered to go to the dance with you. I didn’t really know if you wanted to go to the dance with a loser like me. You are ten times nicer than me I thought that you thought I was a jerk. I was actually mustering up the courage to ask you to the dance. Yes! I will go to the dance with you.” She said that with a smile a mile high. She couldn’t have look happier. Yet, something felt wrong. She had some sort of look in her eyes which hinted a laugh was boiling inside of her. Her eyes were red and sort of angry and made it look like hate but more like she was crying. Frank presumed that it was from a sad movie that she watched the previous night.
He wasn’t going to let this ruin his day. He was going to the dance with the girl of his dreams. He did a little fist pump in the air and went to his next class. In the process of all the excitement, he realized that he was someone’s crush. He was Hazel Levesque’s crush. He was so excited that he was going to the dance that he caught himself thinking of her during his classes. His day was going great and had a smile on his face.
During brunch, Drake went up to him, sporting a smile as he asked teasingly
“How did it go? Wait, don’t tell me. She said no because you didn’t let your best friend come with you and be your wingman.”
Drake and Hazel are really good friends and Drake told him that she would listen to him if he asked her. He was really outgoing and he always knew what to say. He was an awesome friend, but could get a little crazy. That’s why they were friends. Drake was the one one who would get into trouble while Frank always bailed him out. But that’s why they are friends. When Frank told Drake that he was going to ask Hazel to the dance, he was so happy for him. So many boys had a crush on Hazel and Drake had given Frank the impression that he liked Hazel, but he didn’t want this to ruin his mod.
Deep inside Drake’s mind, he was searing with anger. He had asked Frank to tag along so he could ask Hazel if Frank got rejected. Hazel never fell for dorks like Frank. He felt so bad about thinking up this plan. They had been friends since kindergarten. He didn’t want this to ruin the great friendship they had going. This isn’t going to ruin their friendship. Instead, Drake routed on for the couple and helped Frank get ready for it.
“She said yes! I am so happy!” exclaimed Frank.
Drake was so happy for them.
“Great job Frank! Wait, did she do that thing where she went to go talk with her friends? Classic Hazel .”
Right then, the bell rang and they had to rush to class. Frank was so excited to go home to tell his older sister who was in high school and was a “cool kid”. She was great at getting people to like her and she was going to help him dress really cool for the dance.
When he got home, Frank immediately ran to Sophia, his older sister. He told her everything that had happened.
“Oh my gosh! My little brother has a girlfriend, my little brother has a girlfriend. Wait till Mom and Dad here about this. This is going to be great. We need to get you new shoes, a haircut, some nicer clothes, and what am I forgetting? Oh yeah! We need to get you the perfect ride to the dance. Come on, let’s go! ” as she raced to the car, almost forgetting her phone and keys.
“I have the best older sister.” said Frank as he hugged Sophia.
He jumped into the car and turned the volume up. His favorite song, “Locked Away” by R. City and Adam Levine was on and he and his sister sang away the loudest they could be. They finally reached the mall and they raced to the stores.
“I won!”Sophia said, so out of breath that she needed to sit down. “It has been along time since I was on the track team.” They sprinted towards the shoe section.
“Let’s get you some dress shoes and maybe some shoes for me. What size are you?” asked Sophia.
“Size 8 in boys and 7 in mens.” replied Frank. Sophia scanned through some of the shoes until she found black shoes with a winged tip. They looked very uncomfortable but Sophia assured him that it was comfy and felt like walking on clouds. She wasn’t lying when she said that. The padding was so soft if they made a pillow out of it, he would never wake up. They finished paying the clerk and went to the clothing store.
“Race you to the boys aisle.” Frank said as he sprinted towards the aisle. Sophia came a minute later. She ruffled through some of the clothes and through some of the clothes and picked out 5 or 6 for him to try on. There was barely anyone in the dressing rooms, which made him a little happier. He entered the dressing room and put on the first shirt. He didn’t notice the tag that was on the inside and he got scratched in the eye. He howled in pain and Sophia came running in.
“Oh my gosh! Are you okay? Let me see. Oh! It’s pretty bad. We got to get you to the doctor right now. Let me take the shirt off so we don’t get in trouble!” The pain was horrible but somewhat manageable. He was scared that he had lost vision. He was even more scared that Hazel wouldn’t go to the dance with him. Sophia walked him over to the car and and told me everything is okay, although she was freaking out way more then she should be.
“Mom and Dad are going to kill me!” muttered Sophia. They went to the doctor and she said that it was a scratch on the cornea and that it would heal in a day. That was great news but the downside is that he would have to wear a eye patch. After the whole talk with Mom and Dad, Frank went to sleep, thinking about how Hazel was going to react. He slept well and almost forgot that he had a huge eyepatch on his eye.
When he went up to Hazel , without even taking a look at Frank’s eyepatch, Hazel said in a panicked voice, “I can’t go to the dance with you.” She walked away with her friends, almost on the verge of tears. Frank thought to himself, what did I do? He played the scene back in his head. I don’t think that she saw the eye patch. She didn’t even look up. The dance was in 3 days. Why didn’t she tell me yesterday when I asked her? All these thoughts flooded Frank’s mind. He felt depressed the whole day. When he went home, he went straight to his room, did his homework, and then laid on the bed, sulking, almost on the verge of tears. He had really broken up. He stayed that way the whole day. Sophia came in and said, “You okay little bro?”
“Don’t talk to me.” He barely slept. When he woke up, he barely wanted to go to school. His parents didn’t know why because he didn’t tell anyone. When he went to school, Hazel approached him.
“I don’t want to talk to you.” Frank said as he started to walk away.
“Wait. Don’t go. I only told you no because I was scared and nervous. I meant everything when you asked me. Can we please go to the dance together?” asked Hazel .
Frank couldn’t say no. He was ecstatic. He was going to the dance.
He answered, “Yes. I will go to the dance with you.” The shined so brightly that it almost blinded his eyes. At that point, he was happy the patch was going to be off so he didn’t look like a complete fool at the dance.
Frank came out of his sadness and asked his sister if he could go shopping again. Of course, Sophia was a little hesitant to take him to the mall because she knew how popular kids worked. She had once fallen for the trick and she was hurt. That just motivated her to fight back. That’s how she became popular. She agreed anyways and teased him about that instead of going to the doctor to remove the eye-patch, we they would have to go get another eye-patch. Even though he knew that it was a joke, he was careful putting on his shirt that Sophia picked out. It was a dress shirt and came with a complimentary tie (which of course he wasn’t going to wear). Sophia decided it looked great on him and she was going to buy it.
At around that time, they had to go to the doctor to get the patch off. The doctor gave the okay and said that it would be a little sensitive and gave him these weird sunglass looking things and told him to wear for the rest of the day, which wasn’t very long since it was 5:30 in the evening. He had got the shoes, the clothes, and all they needed to do was get a haircut and a ride to the dance. They drove to the barber and got a trim that made him look like Simon Cowell. They were on there way home when Sophia screamed, “WE FORGOT A RIDE TO THE DANCE!” The startled Frank thought that something had happened and went into panic mode. He snapped out of it. “Where are we going to get a ride for the dance at such short notice?”
“Don’t worry little bro. I got you. My friend’s dad owns a limo company and he said that he would do anything for me. I think he likes me.”
“Okay. That works. How much does it cost because I only have $50”
“Free off cost. My treat to you.”
“Wow! Thanks! I owe you one!”
The drove to the place and Sophia saw her friend. Since Sophia knew him, his dad gave her a limo and a driver and told him to give it back to him in the morning after the dance and we could pick it up a hour before the dance to get lunch. We couldn’t thank him enough. Sophia agreed to be there driver (under order of their mom and dad). All they had to do was wait. Frank couldn’t sleep whole night because of the excitement. When he finally did sleep, he dreamt about Hazel and him dancing until the stars came out. He wanted that to become reality.
When he went to school, he brought Hazel a corsage he made out of the flowers that grew in his backyard. They were pink, white, and yellow, her favorite colors. He had arranged in a heart shape. Time flew by and before he knew it, the bell rang. The dance started at 6pm and it was already 4pm. Sophia picked him up and told him to get ready as she went to go get the limo. He put on his shirt, his pants, and his shoes just in time for Sophia to park out front. Sophia invited a few of her friends to come in the limo because she didn’t know what to do with the time. Sophia’s friend’s dad gave them the ultimate version so it was stocked to the brim with candy. He was so nervous that he started munching on the candy. When they finally picked Hazel up, Frank looked dumbfounded. He didn’t know what to say so Sophia started a conversation with Hazel.
“How are you today, Hazel?” asked Sophia through the screen.
“How do you know my name?! I have never seen you before in my entire life.” asked Hazel wildly.
“Did Frank forget to tell you? I am his sister, Sophia. I am your driver today.” Sophia said in a calming voice. Hazel breathed a sigh of relief.
“Okay. Thanks for telling me that. I am good. Thank you for asking.” said Hazel as she put her guard down. By that time, Frank had chimed in.
“Sorry for not telling you that she is my sister. She is really friendly and not scary at all.”
Hazel chuckled, “That was really funny. I didn’t know you were jokester.” By that time, they had reached the school and saw 20 or 30 people walking into the gym. It looked like they were under the stars. Sophia left and the awkward silence came back. It was short listed as the DJ started playing Hazel’s favorite song. She started busting out some dance moves and she couldn’t stop herself from singing along.
“You are a really good singer and dancer. I suck at singing but a I can bust a move or two.” Frank said as he did his rendition of a moonwalk. The night went great and was nearing the end. A slow song came on and he decided to dance with her. He didn’t realize that everyone was behind him. His face became so red that he looked like a tomato. He wanted to stop, but Hazel wouldn’t let him. The song ended a few seconds later. By that time, Sophia came and picked them up. The stars were out and the night looked beautiful. They dropped Hazel off and drove off in silence. He had a perfect night with the perfect girl.
