narrative unit for school that i was forced to do
Jason didn’t know what was worse, the fact that his dad had died in the army, or that his mom had decided to completely check out and do nothing around the house. He was still trying to decide.
Everyday Jason would come home and do pretty much everything a mom would do but with homework, And Jason was getting tired of it. Finally, it was summer. his mom had started making her own food but Jason had to do everything else.
after the first month of summer he snapped, he just couldn’t do it anymore.
He had planned it all out. he took $150, a change of clothes for 4 days, a sleeping bag (with an inflatable pillow) ,and a blanket. He knew that after a few hours his mom would wonder where he was so he left a note that said
“Dear, Mom
I’m sorry to tell you that i have decided to leave, the stress of my everyday life is overwhelming and i just can’t stand it anymore.
Now you will have to do your own chores. Please don’t try and find me , i may come back in my own time but for now i want to be alone i’m so sorry and i love you very much.
sincerely,
Jason
P.S,
I took the framed family photo and left you a copy, Just to remember what you and dad look like.
“well”, Jason said to himself,” I’ve done what i can, no turning back now.”
So with that Jason set off on his amazing journey called life.
He left at 3:40 so he had plenty of time to find shelter. It was a good thing he had brought his digital watch or else he would not have known when the sun was going down or how long he had. It was a nice warm june day in Colorado so he didn’t really need much of the blankets.
Jason had taken shelter in an alleyway behind a dunkin donuts shop. To Jason it seemed like a good idea because he found a box of doughnuts, but he had no idea how hard the next few months we're going to be.
Jason woke up around 7:30 and had all his stuff packed by 7:45.
Now it was his first day of being homeless, or as Jason prefered to call it being a “rebel.”
But know it was time to make a plan. He learned a thing or two from watching tv, like that the police would start searching for a missing person 24 hours after the the person was reported. This means that Jason had approximately 15 hours left before the police department started looking for him. He also knew if they didn’t find him they would start communicating with other states asking about him. He had to figure out what he should do. Then he felt his stomach grumble and he realized that the first thing to do, was eat. After eating 2 out of the 6 donuts he got up and started to walk. He didn’t even know where he was going, and the was the best part.
It wasn’t easy, Jason had waited along the rails of an old train that would pass by. his destination was california and he would do anything to get there. After about four hours he saw the big old train speeding down
the tracks. “It’s now or never.” Jason said to himself as he started to jog next to the train. Just as he was about to reach the end of the train he jumped and grabbed onto one of the metal rails on the side and barely made it.
“So that actually happened.” Jason said uneasily as he walked into on of the train cars. It was mostly empty except for some crates.
Jason realized how much his dad helped him, and also how much he missed him. His dad had taught him almost everything he knew. Jason realized and processed it for the first time, he would never see his dad again. He was there, all alone, and he had to let all the sorrow, all the misery, all the despair, and all the anger out in a giant flood of tears that has been building up inside of him for weeks.
He cried for about an hour. he had been trying to hold it back, to look strong, but here jason could let it out and no one would be there.
As jason cried the sky started to blacken as the night fell. Jason had found a nice warm cozy spot in between to crates with some hay, like the ones you see in the movies.
Before bed Jason went to bed Jason he had another donut and sang the old song “ Twinkle twinkle little star” like his mother used to when he was younger. He was thinking about his family, how nice it was before. And his eyelids got heavier, and heavier, and heavier until they finally they closed
WOOO WOOOO was the first and loudest thing Jason heard that entire day. He opened the door and saw a sign pass by. he didn't know but he was pretty sure the sign said
“Now leaving Colorado
Welcome to Ohio”
And that was exactly what jason wanted. He probably already had missing posters up but at least he was farther away.
Jason never liked to stay in one place for too long. After he got off the train he had stumbled around the woods for a few days until he found a shelter for homeless kids. He stayed there for awhile until leaving to kansas, then to idaho, then he got to minnesota.he had been walking along a road in south dakota when a family had decided to take pity on him and give him a ride, and when they asked where to he just replied with
“ Anywhere but here ma’am.”
By that time time Jason was 16.
wow” Jason said to himself “ I ran away almost three years ago and i still made it.”
He still had the gun from the train and he hadn't had to use it, yet.
He strolled the streets maybe looking for a small store that he might be able to take a few necessities from so he found a little 711 that he took some chips and other things that he could use, like lighters. he used a little pop up tent he had acquired and a sleeping bag and went to sleep early.
Jason planned on doing what his dad did, go into the army.
Jason couldn't rush into it so he waited until he turned 20. He had spent the past year bulking up and making sure that he was in his peak physical condition.
As he approached the booth that was next to a pier with a battle ship docked he started to feel nervous, should he really do this, could he even pass the tests? Nonsense, of course he could. Jason had been through too much trying to achieve his dream and he was not about to just give up, especially because he had spent 7 years away from home. he signed up and the guy told him to get on the boat. he did as he was told and was directed below deck to a room full of other soon-to-be soldiers. The room had no windows and only one door. Jason learned a lot from his dad but the most important thing that he learned was that you can't make it if you don't have anyone to back you up. he spotted a young man about his age from across the room. He had black hair and blue eyes. He was sitting alone in the back with his arms crossed and a lonely look on his face. Jason walked over to him.
“Sup” Jason said uneasily
“How's it going?” the man replied with a deep but friendly tone, almost as if he had been hoping someone would talk to him.
“Anyone sitting there?” jason said pointing to the chair
“Not that i know of, take a seat.”
“Thanks, so what's your name.”
“The names Cameron, Cameron Grimes , how ‘bout you.”
“Jason singer.”
Jason and cameron were talking for awhile and got to know each other. As it turns out they had a lot in common. over a loudspeaker a man who sounded like a captain said
“Ladies and gentlemen please take a seat we are about to start our departure.”
A man also the same age as cameron and jason with blonde hair and stormy gray eyes joined their conversation. They all immediately connected. the man's name was Frank
They were the the best of friends, the first that jason has had for a few years. Nothing could separate them, or so they thought.
All three of them were transferred to an army base in the middle of nowhere. No one knew where they were because they shipped them their while everyone was below deck.
“ALRIGHT LINEUP NOW YOU MAGGOTS.” yelled the general, all the new recruits that were on the ship were standing in a courtyard in the middle of a field that had all different kinds of training devices.
“ My name is greg mcarthur, but if you dare call me greg i will work you till you break. And that is a promise, DO YOU UNDERSTAND!”
“Yes general!” replied the crew.
The captain walked up to jason and yelled
“What are you going to do in this camp soldier!” the captain asked him
“ I am going to do whatever you say as fast as possible, sir!” Jason replied
“You might be the smartest soldier here, I want everyone to listen to what he just said and follow it exactly!” replied the captain.
The next three months where the hardest Jason had ever endured. They did every kind of training imaginable. Everyday Jason and his buddies went to their cabin everyday more and more sore.
Beep-beep-beep. It was the sound of the General who could control what time their alarm clock went on. It was for him and his friends, they were being deployed.
“ Ok come on get up guys, this is the day we’ve been training for.”
“ What-what's going on” cameron said with his pillow sticking to his face.
“Where being deployed so hurry up and get ready:” said Frank who had already jumped out of bed and was getting his gear on.
“Really?” cameron said, shocked “That's what i'm talkin about!”
They all suited up and got to the landing strip where they had a dozen other soldiers waiting
“AlRIGHT BOYS,” the captain yelled so they could hear him over the sound of the plane engines, “THIS IS THE DAY YOU WILL GIVE IT YOUR ALL OUR DIE TRYING!”
They stormed into the back of the plane where the all sat waiting .
“Hey guys,” Jason whispered to cameron and Frank, no matter what happens we're friends and I just wanted to let you guys know that you both have been the best people i know.”
“Jason,” Frank Said , “ I think i speak for the both of us when i say that you, well you are one of the greatest person the we know, and i hope that we all make it through this. Maybe you’ll even find your mom at the end of this.”
Yeah he pretty much summed up everything and i love you , in the manly bro-to -bro way not the other kind, of course.”Cameron said
“Yeah i know” Jason chuckled
they felt they plane shutter and they knew that the landing wheels were out, they were about to land.
When they got on the ground they saw the back door open to the plane and the slowly and silently crept through the forest. They walked for about an hour and a half with their weapons ready until they heard a giant battle cry and out of nowhere dozens of foreign soldiers bursts out of the trees and bushes armed and loaded.
Jason, cameron and Frank ducked behind a clump of bushes where they couldn't be seen.
During the battle Frank was hit.
“WE GOTTA GO BACK COVER ME” Jason told cameron as he picked up Frank And threw him over his shoulder. As the three of them made their way back to the plane they had to stop twice to apply bandages. finally they made it back.
“GET US OUT OF HERE” Jason yelled at the pilot who had been armed and waiting in case of emergency.
“WE GOT AN INJURED SOLDIER WHO NEEDS MEDICAL ATTENTION, QUICK.
“Right away sir”
The plane swooped off before they could even strap in.
6 hours later the doctor came out of the operating room.
“We were able to save him but he lost his arm. He will regain consciousness soon, You can wait in his room.” with that the doctor left them alone.he heard sniffling and look ed over to see what was going on. He saw cameron with tears running down his face. Jason picked up a chair and sat next to cameron
“Sup.”
“It's all my fault.” Cameron said through tears. “I should have been covering him. It's my fault he lost his arm.”
“Hey man, listen it's because of you that he's even alive
“What?” Cameron said confused.
“Look, if you hadn't told me he was hit, or if you hadn't covered me i wouldn't have been able to even get it back here. You're the hero.”
“Thanks Jason, I owe you one”
Then one of the doctors wheeled in Frank who was half awake.
“ Hey champ, hows it goin” Jason said in the softest tone possible
“ I-im fine i think, well fine except for my arm.” Frank tried to get up but was weak.
“ Hey man, you need your rest so just lie down and we’ll be back soon.”
Jason and cameron left the room, they both could barely stand being in the same room because they felt so bad.
Jason and cameron woke up at 4:30 the next morning, they were being deployed again.
Jason and cameron stayed in the army for 4 more years after Frank accident.
He had stayed at the base and he did the training but he wasn’t allowed back in the war.
they talked with him all the time.
after they were discharged they each got their own house on the same street in the same neighborhood.
They remembered what Frank had said right before their first deployment.
He said they should find Jason's mom.
Jason knew a lot of people from the army and he was able to pull some strings, and he got his friend Hazel to find his mom and she was able to track his jason's mom down to
“old times retirement home” they all lived in california and his mom was in colorado but that wasn't about to stop them.
All three of them decided to pack up in Frank truck because it was the biggest.
It took them three days to drive to colorado because they had to stay a night at three different hotels. The hotels may have been small but their was nothing jason would rather do than hang out with his best friends.
“ Hey-Frank are you awake.”
“Yeah i'm still awake.”
“I gotta ask man, what's it like not having an arm, i can understand if you don't want to answer, actually nevermind i'm sorry.”
“No its ok, Ive actually been waiting to tell you guys because i wanted it to be a surprise but here.”
Frank pulled out a long flesh colored thing.
“Come with me outside to show you what it is, i don't want to wake cameron.”
Jason followed him outside and saw that Frank Had something that looked like a metal cap on his stump and a prosthetic arm in his hand. jason and cameron hadn't seen it before because of his shirt sleeves.
“ this is the latest in prosthetic arm technology, watch.”
He placed near the metal cap and it magnetically attached, a piece of the flesh colored cloth covered his stump and it looked like he had an actual arm.
“Dude that's totally cool it looks so real.
“ it doesn't just look really, shake my hand.” Frank said.
Jason shook his hand but it wasn't what he expected, The arm gripped his hand and gave him a firm shake.
“Wow, That thing feels like a real arm!”
“Yeah I can actually control it, it can do anything a regular arm can do, and thanks to one of the strongest kinds of magnets it won't come off no matter what.”
He did a funny dance to prove his point.
“Thats great man, now what do you say we get some sleep.”
After they showed cameron the arm they hit the road, with Frank Driving.
They finally arrived at the retirement home.
They walked in the place and looked around, then he saw her.
she looked just like she did the day he left. she was 68 but he knew exactly what she looked like.
“Hi mom.” Jason said for the first time in 12 years.
“Could-could it be, Jason.”
“I'm here mom, i'm right here.”he bent down and hugged his mother and she hugged him with all her might. Tears streamed down both of their faces.
“Im so glad that you're here, i thought id never see you again.”
As they caught up with each other jasons and his mom both realized that she didn't have much time left. They agreed that she would get a plane ticket california in 4 days she would arrive at his house and live with him for the rest of her life. Jason threw a surprise party for his mom and set up a room for her right next to his in his two story house.
He never in his life missed a day with her.
“ How's it going (blank), and cameron would say to him on his way to college.”
all three of them had decided to become lawyers. He would leave in Cameron’s truck with (BLANK), and all three of them would go to their classes together. They talked all day long and when they got home they would each do their own things but jason never missed a day to talk to his mom, if he was in a bad mood or a sad mood he would always talk to her.
Jason and Cameron and Frank were having a good day and then when he got home he couldn't wait to tell his mom. He opened the door and saw her passed out in the living room.
“CAMERON,” Jason yelled at the house to his left, “CALL 911” He heard cameron run in behind him.
“Jason what happened!?”
“ I dont know , just walked in and found her like this, did you call the police yet.”
“yeah,” cameron said,” they’re sending an ambulance.”
After they got her to the hospital the doctor said that she had about 10 minutes to live.
Jason's friends both went inside to say their goodbyes because over the time that she had been at Jason's house they had grown close with his mother.
“Hi mom,” Jason said, “how are you feeling”
“ I heard what the doctor said, how i only have a few minutes to live.”
I'm so sorry mom
Don't be, it's not your fault, everyone dies, but at least I got to see you, one last time.
Jason hugged his mother with tears streaming down his face and he swallowed the knot in his throat and was able to say one last thing to his mother
“I love you.”
And a few seconds later he heard the long, steady, continuous beep of the machine that told him his mother was dead, and Jason sat there, crying over her body. Jason thought back, and he felt like that poor helpless boy on the train heading to nowhere, helpless and afraid but this time, he wasn’t alone. He had friends who would help him and comfort him.
3 days later they had the funeral. most of Jason's buddies came over, even his girlfriend hazel. after the funeral his friends came over. Jason, Cameron, and Frank had lowered her casket into the pit as everyone cried and threw roses on the box that contained his mother.
After a few weeks Jason was able to cope with his mother's death.
1 year later he proposed to hazel at (add name) she said yes and they got married in april and had a boy named John. Jason cameron and Frank became successful lawyers.
Even though she was dead, Jason and his friends would go to her grave and even bring a birthday cake. No matter what, rainy or sunny, he would always visit his mother.
Sometimes Cameron and Frank Would go with him, but he preferred to go alone and be alone, except for his mother, he could almost feel her there. Her warm hand that would stroke his head as he fell asleep as a boy, her soothing voice that would comfort him if he had a bad day at school, her laugh when his dad came home. He’d glance over at his dad's grave next to his moms and remember the time his dad taking him fishing, his comforting scent that made jason feel warm inside.
A single tear made its way down Jason's cheek and as he sat there between their graves he'd whisper the words he told his mother, the last thing he told his father, the words that would bring him joy and through tears he’d whisper to the presence of his mother and father,
“I love you.”
