The Big Day
Waking up that warm summer morning, my mind was a nervous wreck. My stomach ached as my brain thought about what it was going to be like. In just a few hours my dad would be taking me to the driver training academy to take my road test. Even with months of practice and experience, my mind still had doubt. All I could think about was what if I make a dumb mistake on the parking portion of the test, and don't even make it to the driving portion. I didn't even have the comfort of knowing what the test was like because my twin brother, Tyler, wasn't taking his road test till the next day. Therefore, I waited anxiously for the time to pass. Food didn't even cross my mind as noon quickly passed by, for in only a half an hour I would be on my way to the driver training academy to take my road test.
Hearing the words, " its time to go, " slowly come out of my dad's mouth made me perturbed. Slowly slipping into my dad's truck, we started our way to the academy. The drive over I didn't say a word; I tried to think about all the laws and proper ways to do things while driving. Pulling into the parking lot, my heart started beating rapidly. My dad and I walked into the building were he filled out some paper work to prove I had enough experience. After the paper work, that seemed to take forever, the instructor was ready to get things started. While walking out of the building to my dad's Ford ranger he told my to get inside while he inspected the car to make sure it was road worthy. Once he was finished with the outside he had me start the truck to see if any of the emergency lights were on. However non of the lights were on, so we were clear to start. The instructor then told me to dive over to the parking course where he was going to evaluate my parking skills. The parking course consisted of three different obstacles, one obstacle was to drive within two feet on these cones, the second obstacle was to park backwards, and the final one was to parallel park. Having practiced the night before, I quickly, but diligently moved through the first two obstacles, but when I went to parallel park my front end of the car swiped one of cones knocking it over. However, by only knocking one cone over I was in the clear to drive on the road.
The Ford ranger is a pretty small truck, so my dad had to squeeze into the back seat so that my instructor could sit up front with me. Once we were all in the truck he had me make sure everyone had their seat belts on, then we were on our way. Pulling up to the driveway of the driver training academy, my instructor told me to take a left turn. Turning my left blinker on and slowly making my way out to the road caused me to panic a little. I couldn't believe this was happening, but I quickly got a grip and forced my self to calm down. I knew God was by my side, and with him by my side I knew anything was possible. We drove on the road M40 for what seemed about 15 minutes; although, I was so nervous keeping track of time wasn't on my agenda. Then my instructor told me to take a right into the residential area of town, so as nonchalantly as a could I turned on my right turn signal and did what he had asked. After driving around that area for awhile, he had me drive on red Arrow highway until we came across the exit for the freeway I94.
Having been in the truck for nearly an hour my body was covered with sweat from nervous anticipation. However, knowing the course was almost over I pushed through the stress of it all. Turning onto the ramp for I94 I began to accelerate, and ever so gently merge into traffic. Being Sunday the traffic wasn't too bad on the freeway, my mind could rest a little while. We drove on the freeway until we reached the exit we needed to get off at. A sense of joy rushed through my body as we got closer to the driver training academy. Time flew as we pasted through my hometown, by then I was only minutes away from getting my license.
As we pulled into the driver academy parking spot I felt a sense of relief, it was all over. My instructor turned to me, and the words, " you pass," came out of this mouth. At that moment I felt so accomplished, we walked inside to get my certificate. My shirt was soaked in sweat but it didn't matter to me. The day I took my drivers test is a day I will not soon forget. It was one of the most nerve wracking days of my life but also one if the most exciting!
