Brunch
I stared up at the lights implanted in the ceiling as I scratched my leg. Itchy tights were never my thing. I impatiently tugged on my mom’s skirt.
“Can we go now?” I asked a bit too loudly
“Not yet, sweetie,” Mom put her fingers to her lips motioning for me to be quiet. “There’s still fifteen minutes of mass left,”
I rolled my eyes and stomped my foot. Fifteen minutes?! That’s forever! Mom shot me a look, her eyebrows raised, and motioned for me to sit down. I folded my little arms across my chest and plopped myself down in the mostly empty pew. Nobody attended early morning mass like Mom and me.
As the old man in the robe droned on, I got sleepy. My eyes began to flutter and my head felt heavy. I rolled over on my stomach stretched myself out on the pew and folded my hands beneath my head. I let my eyes droop until I couldn’t keep them open any longer. Suddenly, I felt a gentle tap on my upper back.
“Come on, sweetie, it’s time to go now,” My mom’s voice was music to my ears.
My eyes flew open as I practically jumped out of the pew and took hold of her hand.
“Yay!” I screeched, tugging her hand. “It’s finally time to go see Grandma at First Watch!”
“It is, isn’t it?” My mom smiled down at me, stroking my hair.
“Yesss!” I yelled again, flashing a smile that was proudly missing a few teeth. “And we don’t want to make her wait, do we?” I said in a stern voice, placing my hands firmly on my hips. She laughed her musical laugh as she held out her hand. I placed mine in hers as we made our way towards the car.
“Unlock it! Unlock it!” I yelled, ripping my hand from hers and running as fast as my little legs could carry me. I heard the familiar sound of beep beep as I jumped up to reach the handle and with all my might yanked the door open. I climbed into the backseat and had my seatbelt buckled before Mom had even gotten to the car. I squeezed my eyes shut and kicked my legs against the back of the front seat, too excited to contain myself. I heard the familiar sound of Mom gently opening the car door and settling into the driver’s seat.
“You ready?” She asked.
“Yes!” I said, emphasizing the word the best I could, as one of my front teeth was missing. She turned the key and the car roared to life. Family friendly music filled the backseat as we pulled out of the parking lot.
A few songs later, we pulled into my favorite place. First Watch. I sat up and quickly scanned the parking lot through the window. The familiar ice cream parlor, the pizza shop and the burger joint all rushed through my peripheral vision and i searched for that one thing that mattered. There it was! The small black Toyota sedan. Grandma’s car.
“Mom! She’s here!” I screamed, whipping back around.
“Yeah! She’s probably inside waiting, so we better get going,” Mom said.
I responded by violently unbuckling the seatbelt and swinging the car door open. I flung myself out of the car and sprinted to the door. I grabbed ahold of the handle and with all my might, pulled it open. A smile jumped on my face as I spotted her. Sitting in the waiting area, one leg crossed over the other, staring out the window.
“Grandma!” I shrieked, running towards her with my arms open wide. She turned to look at me and smiled from ear to ear, her arms were awaiting my hug.
“Hi, honey!” She exclaimed. “You’ve gotten so big!”
“Grandmaaa, I saw you last week!” I said, rolling my eyes
“Oh I know, but you’ve still grown!” She said, smiling.
“They grow up too fast,” My mom stated, suddenly standing behind us.
“Well,” Grandma suggested, “Should we get a table?”
“Yes! I want a chocolate chip pancake. With lots of syrup,” I added.
Mom and Grandma both chuckled. I took mom’s hand and we walked to our table, where all the pancakes, and chocolate, and syrup I could ever want were waiting for me.
