Endangered Book Review
Think about a time in your life that you’ve ever been bullied by someone. Now think of a time you wanted to get revenge on someone who’s bullied you. Think about what you would do to get revenge on someone. Now imagine this, you have amazing photography skills and your not so popular at school so it’s easy to stay hidden. These things either happened to Panda or were done to someone else by Panda. In Endangered, Lamar Giles shows how revenge doesn't always turn out like you wanted it to.
Lauren, which is Panda’s real name, isn’t the most popular person out there. She was bullied for as long as she can remember. She is all about keeping her identity a secret. Panda has a website called gray scales in which she goes by gray but no one knows that it's actually her who is the owner. She lets out everyone's secrets on her website. Anyone who has ever bullied her in the past. The only person who knows that she’s gray is her best friend, but that's all about to change.
She starts to get blackmailed by someone but she doesn't know who it is. She has many suspicions of people in her photography class but they usually prove to be wrong. This admirer is making her do all sorts of things from taking pictures of storms to breaking into buildings to take pictures from super high up. Right now it’s harmless play but she doesn't tell her best friend Ocie. She would probably freak out or over exaggerate it. Stuff starts to happen at school and Panda’s worst nightmare starts to come true; people start to notice her. People are starting to like her more than the most popular girl in school. Now, her “admirer” is getting scary. He’s threatening her and she's not sure what to do. She doesn't want to tell anyone because then everyone will know that she’s gray and they’ll probably hate her.
Overall, I love this book. I love how the author makes the main character not as popular as other people usually do. I like the author's word play in the book also. I don't really like the speed of the book. It starts out really slow and it's hard to get hooked but, hang in there because this book is amazing.
There is a lot of conflict in this book. Mainly it was always between Panda and someone else. Like when panda wanted Ocie to come with her into the storm, Ocie got super nervous and didn't really want to do it. Panda also has conflict with her ex-boyfriend but, i mean, who wouldn't. She also has a lot of conflict with the most popular, and meanest girl at her school.
In Endangered, Lamar Giles shows how revenge doesn't always turn out like you wanted it to. Panda goes through many trials in this book. She is put to the ultimate test. This shows that revenge isn't always the best option and eventually you will get caught. What you really want to take away from this is that “an eye for an eye” and “a tooth for a tooth” isn't always the best thing to live by.
