A Day in the Life of a Senior Citizen
He was an old man who liked to sleep in late. He always tried to wake up early in the morning to see the sunrise. But, the old man always slept in because of his aches and pains. But yet, this special day he felt like he could do it.
“Beep, beep, beep, beep.” The old man shut off his alarm. “Ugh,” he grunted, “Is this even worth it?” the old man thought. He had decided that he should sleep in even after the countless attempts to wake up at this early hour. The old man pushed his blankets over his head, and closed his eyes.
It was about mid morning when the old man woke up alone in his bed. He glanced towards a photo of the happy times of him and his wife getting married with a slight smile. But then he shrugged it off and hopped into his wheelchair.
The old man rolled to the elevator and took it to the first floor where his nurse was. She asked, “Are you ready for your medication?”
The old man replied, “Yes,” and then drank some water and then he swallowed the pills. The old man knew that no matter how many pills he took or what the pills were, nothing was going to cure his rare cancer. He did not know when, but he knew the end was near.
The face of this old man was drooping, this was as if everyday his cheeks fell lower and lower. His brown eyes were duller, hair grayer, and face colder every day that went by. The old man knew that his days were numbered, and that he must spend them full of happiness.
Even thought the old man had a multi million-dollar house in Florida, it didn’t seem to ever cheer him up. Neither was his yacht, and he realized that he needed to find true happiness in his last moments on Earth.
He rolled outside on his wheelchair and it was a beautiful day. This didn’t matter to the old man because every day was the same in Florida to him. He rolled out towards his pool but that didn’t cheer him up either. Nothing was making him feel better, he realized that he was lonely and needed to talk to friends or family.
The old man decided to call up his daughter to come to his house today, “Hello?” he asked.
He realized that the woman who answered the phone was not his daughter, “You need to come now! Your daughter is in the hospital having a …” she yelled but the phone disconnected.
“Oh no,” the old man thought, “what is going on?” He rolled out to his nurse and they got into the car and drove to the local hospital.
The old man and the nurse rushed into the door and asked where the old man’s daughter was and then rushed to her room. The old man heard baby cries as he opened the door. A tear struck down his face and realized why people live, for moments like these.
“Can I hold him?” asked the old man.
“Of course Dad.” she replied.
The baby’s soft hands and tiny feet wrapped around the old man. The baby giggled, and looked at the old man’s foggy grey eyes.
“What’s his name?” the old man asked.
“Ben.” She replied.
The old man smiled, closed his eyes, and rested his head back. He shut his ears and fell asleep.
