Speak To Me
The bell rang for the students to get to class. Zayda was at her locker, blushed face. She removed her things from her locker to try to make it to class on time. All her energy was gone after yesterday's night shift at work. She tried to focus on what she needed and what was there as a waste of space.
“Hey Zay. Do you know what was last night homework for Mr.Thomas?” asked her classmate.
“Yeah trigonometry book page 105" Zayda murmured in focusing on her locker.
“Okay. See ya later”
“Yeah! right ! that's awesome! See you in math!” , she said with no attention to her words at all. She finally collected her things with urgency she turned away to leave and then crashed into a figure that grasped her with intensity. Clueless as to what it was she turned in amazement with rapid heartbeat.
“I'm sorry” he said calmly, “ I didn't see you there, I'm trying to find my way around this place.”
Zayda paused in thought as she looked into his eyes that were lightly faded but yet beautiful. His touch felt warm to her chilly body, his hair, a string of it covered his left cheek while the rest was held back in a ponytail.
She pulled herself together. “No , it's fine!”
“My name is Adam, Yours?”
“Zayda,” she respond sweetly. She turned and walked away. She had a feeling about something. Was it his scent? His dreaming eyes ? The way he touched her as though she felt safe within those few seconds. She continued her way to class. As she walked she turned around to look at him only to see he was not no longer there. She bumped into her best friend Bianca later on at the end of the day.
“Did you notice anyone new?” Zayda asked curiously.
“New? No. Why?” Bianca asked.
“Because I was at my locker and I bumped into this guy. I never seen him around before but, was something about him. I don’t know what it was Bianca. Maybe I’m just overthinking this.
He’s just a guy.”
“Well maybe you're not overthinking Zayda.”Bianca said. “Maybe he could be your Prince Charming , your mystery guy or just a complete psycho. Don’t stress it Zay , you have better things to think about like are we going to Gordy’s Pizza or Burger King later on today.”
They both laughed as they headed to Bianca car to leave. Zayda heard calm footsteps behind her , she didn't let it bother her because they began to fade away. The steps got louder as though they were coming at her. Zayda jumped and turned around with fight in her eyes when a soft touch fell upon her shoulders. Both Zayda and Bianca stopped.
“Hey, I didn't mean to scare you. I just thought the way we met earlier was kinda strange”Adam said as he glanced at Zayda and gave her a innocent smile
“Yeah” Zayda said as she took in a slow deep breath.
“If you like we could go out one of these weekends?”
“I would like that Adam.” She got caught in a daze in his eyes remembering how alluring there were.
* * *
Zayda came to reality after remembering the first time they met as she was looking into his eyes as words were spoken in disagreement. They had been on and off . One follow the other as words are being thrown around in anger.
“Maybe we’re wasting our time. Maybe we don't need to be together. You said things that made me not want to continue on with us!” Adam said boldly.
“Well, some things are better said than not said at all. I try so hard to make you understand this feeling I have for you Adam! One day you're here, one day you're not. I don't know if you want to be with me or not! Make it clear!” Zayda hopelessly giving Adam a look of unsure.
“I try too ! I'm trying ok! I don't understand what else you want from me.”
“I can't continue on with you If you don't want me here!” Zayda voice beginning to shake in sadness. Her eyes watering with drops of pain and love.
“Maybe I don't Zayda.” The feeling of care left the room.
“Enough said then.”Zayda said carelessly as she's walking out of the house.
“Zayda wait!” said Adam as he’s coming after her.
Zayda continue walking heading towards her car, parked across the street from Adam’s house. Adam catching up with her , trying to grasp her attention. Zayda looked at him pushed him and walked away. Adam caught up with her again. Zayda pause in the windy , brief , air. In the middle of the street with her back turned against him. Zayda standing with thoughts running in her mind. As she breathes in and out, chills touching and surrounding her body.
Not knowing at the moment how she should feel about him. He showed her a life that made her happy but, she walks with steps of anger , footsteps of care and love and looks over her shoulders in fear of being hurt. Her thoughts remain running and her body is still chill. Adam quivering , praying that she doesn't walk away from him. Not knowing what to do next with her rapid thoughts she turned restlessly to the feeling of safety within Adams arms .
“Adam.” She quietly spoke.
She felt safe within those few seconds. A tear fall on his arm. The feeling of her pain makes him weak. Words were unsaid but their eyes said everything.Interrupted by the sound of squealing tires a car came speedily towards their direction. With no hesitation to stop. Their eyes disconnect, their heartbeat collecting speed. With no further thoughts. Adam reacts.
“I love you Zayda.”
Adam thrust her out of the way. . . .
Zayda open her eyes with a blur vision looking at the blue sky. A blank space in her mind. She leans over to see the love of her life laying flat amongst the hard black ground unresponsive to her call. Her thoughts said Adam , I love you . Adam say , do something. Her thought repeated until they were no longer thoughts. Screaming out her thoughts . “Somebody Help!” Running towards him, she holds him close and calls 9-1-1.
Her heartbeat is the only thing she can hear. Memories of laughing , smiles and kisses running through her head. Her eyes flooding in tears covering her face. Still Adam is unresponsive. The fear of losing him hurt her soul. She couldn't do anything but wait for the ambulance to come as she heard coming miles away. Her thoughts lingered in her mind as the ambulance was pulling up cautiously. The EMT’s were speaking to Zayda trying to understand what happen.
“Ma’am , what happened here”
“Car. Hit Him.” Stumbling over words to say, that's all Zayda could say. Her thoughts wouldn't allow her to speak. She look weak as they are adjusting him on the bed and placing him in the ambulance. She came along, holding his hand as he lying . Zayda glaring at him with love and in fear of losing him. As they are making their way to the hospital, they arrive through the door and to a room. Doctors promptly surrounding Adam.
Three hours past , the only thing that can be heard is the television set above the room in the right hand corner. Adams bed's position in the center of the room. Zayda sitting next to him waiting for a response. Then a soft voice spoke,
“Where am I?”
“Adam , you're alive! Speak to me, I love you.” All of her thinking came to an end when the sound of his voice became music to her ears.
“ Who is Adam?” He asked. . . .
