The Boy that Could
Fearless, without a sign of regret, the boy entered the attic. Who is this boy you might ask? Well this boy is named Charlie. Charlie was a sad yet happy boy. He had spent most of his life in the hospital due to being diagnosed with Leukemia at the age of four, and this was his first time back at his house since then, but during his time at the hospital he’s always stayed positive that he was going to eventually get better. He was just there for a small period of time to get some books to read since all he did at the hospital was read books day in and day out. It was the only thing that had made him occupied.
He finally laid his eyes on a book he wanted to read. It looked a bit odd compared to the other books he had read. This book looked too new for the attic and looked like something you’d see in an English Gentleman film. The title of this book intrigued his curious mind. The Boy that could was the so called title of this book and he was so happy when he had gotten the book; little did he know what he was getting himself into. That night, Charlie was back at his hospital room after his last session of chemotherapy that day. He was ready to settle down with his new book and read all of it that night. The first page read, “For Charlie, The boy that could”, once he saw that, all he could think was,” Ooo a book dedicated to me!?”
He eventually fell asleep, and when he woke up he found himself not at the hospital, but instead a place with dragons, wizards, and all the candy he could ever imagine was there. At this time he didn't care that he wasn't at the hospital; he was too ecstatic about the dragons and wizards that were right in front of him. He continued to explore more of his surroundings. He then ran into a woman with hair as white as clouds, skin as smooth as satin, and a voice as beautiful as a harp. She said, “Hi there young one, are you lost?” Still a bit puzzled he said, “A bit yeah, can you tell me where I am please?” With a smile on her face, the mysterious woman said, “Why, this is the Greatland, the land where anything is possible. Shall we take a walk around?” she said as she put her hand out to welcome Charlie to the Greatland. Charlie wasn’t the type of person who gets comfortable with people easily, but Fareeha was different, almost angelic like. “Oh I’m Fareeha, one of the people who lives here in the Greatland.” she said in a gentle voice. “Here in the Greatland there are no limits to what you can do here.” she said as Charlie and her were walking in the streets. Charlie looked worried, he had just noticed that his parents weren’t with him, neither were the nurses or doctors. “Where are my parents?” Charlie asked with a worry in his voice. “Don’t worry Charlie, They are waiting for you at home.” Fareeha said with a sad feeling inside of her.
“Here is where we teach our visitors how to fly. Do you want to learn how to fly Charlie?” Fareeha asked. With a gleam of excitement beaming from Charlie's face he excitedly said, ”Oh boy do I! I’ve always wanted to learn how to fly! What are we waiting for let's go!” He grabbed Fareeha’s hand and ran into the building. Once inside he put on a bright red jumpsuit that matched the color of his red fire truck toy he always played with at the hospital. Fareeha and Charlie walked back outside to teach Charlie how to fly. With a big bright smile on his face he was ready to take on the world, nothing was going to stop him from doing what he wanted to do and that was to fly. “Boy I can’t wait to tell my parents that I learned how to fly today.” Charlie said with so much enthusiasm in his voice. He let go of Fareeha’s hand with the thought that flying was simple. “Fareeha, does he know yet?” Henry, the son of the ruler of the Greatland, asked Fareeha as he saw Charlie running. “He’s not ready. He’ll know sooner or later.” Fareeha said with a tear trickling down her face.
She wiped off her tears until she heard Charlie yelling, “Fareeha look at me I’m flying!!” he yelled with so much joy in his voice. He then saw a bright ray of light above him. Fareeha wanted to stop him, but she knew this was the time. The closer he went towards the light, the better he saw the ones he loved; his mother, father, sisters, and brothers. “Mom, Dad I’m here!” Charlie screamed once he saw his parent’s right in front of him. Everything went white, and the last thing he heard was, “CHARLIE, CHARLIE, WAKE UP PLEASE!!!”
