The Lockdown
Today was just another normal Wednesday for Jeremy Wilkens, but if he knew what was bound to happen to him at school, he would have never gone.
It was May 21st and school was nearing an end. Jeremy was in 8th grade this year, and he didn’t like school very much, except for the fact that you could talk with your friends all day. Jeremy’s best friend, Thomas, was in most all of Jeremy’s classes and they sat next to each other in every one. They had been best friends since they met each other in 3rd grade. Although Jeremy had other friends, he talked to Thomas the most.
“Dude, you should have seen the look on your face,” Jeremy said laughing. Shortly after he said that, he made an ugly face that made Thomas laugh.
“Shut up”, Thomas said while laughing at Jeremy’s face. Jeremy and Thomas had just gotten out of gym class where Thomas almost had his head taken off while playing dodgeball because Jeremy’s a beast. They kept on joking about it all the way to their next class.
They both had Science next which was one of their favorite classes. Their teacher, Mr. O’Hair, was also one of their favorite teachers because of how fun he was.”Jeremy, would you go and get the papers I just printed”, said Mr. O’Hair. Now, since the school was pretty small, they only had one printer, which was in the basement.
”Sure”, said Jeremy as he got up, and left the classroom for the basement.
There was also one thing Jeremy didn’t like about Mr. O’Hair. He was the only teacher to ask the students to go get the papers in the basement. When Jeremy got to the door leading to the basement, he opened it and gave a disgusted look on his face towards downstairs. The basement smelled musty, was dirty all over, and had poor lighting too. The basement was like a dungeon. But there was one good thing about the basement and it was that it had an office room with a big desk with a computer, book shelves, and of course the printer.
Jeremy walked down the stairs into a musty smell and went into the room to get the papers from the printer. He had collected all of the papers and was just about to leave when he heard the announcements come on.
”Attention! Go into school lockdown! This is not a drill! I repeat, this is not a drill.”
Jeremy got scared for a second, but then calmed down and decided to stay in the room until the lockdown was over.
The bad thing about this office room was that it had no door, just a wide open doorway. Five minutes passed since Jeremy heard the announcements and he got bored, so he went onto the computer and played on it for five minutes. As soon as he got bored of that, he pulled out his phone that he always carried with him, and played on that for another five minutes. Now it had been about ten minutes since the announcements came on and since they had never had a lockdown longer than two minutes, he was getting worried. He remembered Thomas had his phone with him, so he texted him to see what was going on upstairs, and who came into the school.
Jeremy had sent the text but as soon as it had sent, he heard the basement door slam open. Jeremy froze with fear. He stayed quiet to see if the person was just going to close the door and keep on walking. But they didn’t. He heard the door close, and heard footsteps walking down the stairs. Jeremy quickly ran to turn off all the lights in the room and he went to hide under the desk with no lights on but the light of the computer screen.
He kept on hearing the footsteps coming down the stairs. SLAM!SLAM!SLAM! But then he heard the feet hit the basement floor. He was petrified. Then he heard the footsteps coming closer and closer to the room.
Jeremy got as snug up and tight as he could underneath the desk to avoid being seen by the person. He kept on hearing the footsteps getting closer and closer, and louder and louder. But then it happened. The person's footsteps had stopped. Whoever they were, they were right outside the doorway of the office.
The room was engulfed in silence. Nothing could be heard or seen but the light and the soft buzzing of the computer. The person slowly walked into the room, like they knew someone was in there but they didn’t know where. Now, the room wasn’t that big in area, but it seemed like the smallest space on Earth for Jeremy at that moment. The person took three more steps into the room and stopped to look around.
Now Jeremy was absolutely terrified that the person was going to see him hiding under the desk. The person took one more step, but then the worst thing happened. Jeremy’s phone went off and seemed to be the loudest thing he’d ever heard because of all of the fright he had. DING! DING! The person took one more step, and Jeremy threw himself from under the desk asking for mercy.
“Please, please don’t kill me!”, Jeremy screamed at the person. But to his surprise, the man, whoever he was, helped him up and told him to calm down.
“Sorry I frightened you. I’m a father of one of the students here. I was walking to the office and the school issued the lockdown so I just sat down in the hallway and waited for them to call the lockdown off. Since the lockdown was lasting awhile, I got worried and came down here to hide and found you in this room”.
It was a lot for Jeremy to take in but he finally calmed down after all that happened. The man was middle aged, was wearing jeans, had a blue hat on, and had a red light jacket. Once Jeremy had talked with the man for a little bit, he went to see who had texted him. It was Thomas! Jeremy had a feeling of relief.
He read the text in his head,”Jeremy wherever you are be safe and watch out! There's a man who came in and shot Mr. O’Hair and he’s wearing a blue hat, with jeans and a red, light jacket”. Jeremy froze and felt cold and scared. He was thinking in his mind that it was just a coincidence, but in his heart he knew it wasn’t a coincidence. The man in the room, was the man who shot Mr. O’Hair.
Jeremy lifted his head up and had a frightened look on his face. The man seemed to have caught onto Jeremy’s thoughts, then he quickly pulled his gun out but before it was out Jeremy sprinted out of the room running for his life. BANG! BANG! He heard the bullets hitting the stairs as he was running up them. Jeremy just kept on running and running and running. Before he knew it, he was out of the school in the parking lot. He went to hide behind a car and seconds after, the police showed up at the school and rushed in without even noticing Jeremy.
In five minutes, the police were walking out of the school with the man handcuffed and students and teachers were rushing out with relief and happiness that they were no longer in danger of being killed. Thomas rushed over to Jeremy to see if he was okay.
“Jeremy, are you okay? I heard shots go off.”
“Yeah, I’m fine. Other than the fact that I almost just got killed.”
“Are you sure you're okay?”
“Yeah.”
After everything was settled, everyone found out that Mr. O’Hair had stole his girlfriend from him and he was not happy one bit. After that day, Jeremy was never the same. Not in a bad way, but he always seemed to always be more aware than all of the other kids from that point on.
