August 2022 Fiction Contest: One Breath
When you live starving for something for so long, you forget that you even needed it in the first place. So how was I supposed to know that I was dying? Drowning in my own desperation for something I never had. Until the drought ended. The ground broke and we could breathe again as one drop came up. One drop of the air we so desperately needed in this world. This world we colonized forever ago with its oceans. For this one breath of oxygen gave me life; life among the chaos of water. That's all we needed, one precious breath.
A sci-fi flash fiction about a world where the atmosphere is water and air is rare.
