The Sound
Drip, drip, drip.
She heard the sound in the night.
The sound seeped in through her window.
Moving like a pale fog across the floor,
The sound latched onto the broken wooden boards.
She pulled the covers over her head, terrified and cold.
She could hear the sound as it drawled; near and quick.
Drip, drip, drip.
Hiss, hiss, hiss.
Ragged was her breathing as she tried to stay warm.
Her fear pricked at her spine like a million tiny thorns.
Scared half to death, she whimpered.
Praying quietly and glancing all around.
This sound, too, moved across the room.
And she could feel its claws, foreshadowing her doom.
Hiss, hiss, hiss.
Shh, shh, shh.
The eerie sound commanded her.
"Don't make a sound, for it is only me."
She gasped, still and afraid. "Who are you? Who are you?"
No answer came to her, and once again she prayed.
She opened her eyes and came face to face with the sound's gaze.
No other soul heard anything that night, and the sound was pleased.
Shh, shh, shh.
