In the early 1800’s there were two girls, Mary and Jan. Mary and Jan were not good children. They lived with their mother and little sister in a small cabin 2 hours outside of town. Because there was not much to do at home, the girls would pull mean jokes on their mother and little sister. One of their favorite things to do was tell their little sister, who was barely 4 years old, terrifying stories of monsters who would lerk outside the cabin. These stories haunted their little sister and there were many nights where she would wake up screaming because of nightmares. Mary and Jan loved this and took the opportunity to make fun of their younger sister for crying throughout the night when she would wake up in the morning.

To distress their mother the two sisters would hide food that was meant to last the family weeks and complain when their mother would slave to prepare dinner with the few things they would leave in place. If the food was not to the girls liking they would throw horrible fits and scream nasty things to their mother until she would break down crying. Hopelessly the mother would make the two hour walk to the closest market and buy more food only to have the process repeated the following weeks.
Finally Mary and Jans mother had enough of their horrible behavior, she told the two sisters “I will give you girls 3 more chances. If you don't change your behavior after that, me and your sister will leave and I will be replaced with a new mother who has iron teeth, nasty mangled hair, an appetite for bad little girls, and a long thumping tail.” The girls laughed at their mother and said “Okay but we know you will never leave us.”
Not even two hours after the mother had warned the girls about what would happen if the continued to act out, Mary and Jan had a new idea.
The sisters had few rules but one of them was to always be home before dark. That night the girls decided to stay out past dark and wait for their mother to come looking for them. Soon enough they heard the mother begin to call their names, “Mary? Jan? Girls please come home, it’s dark out. Girls please come back with me”
Laughing at their mother's calls the girls darted back through the woods to the cabin and locked the doors shut. When their mother returned back and noticed she had been locked out she began to knock on the door and cry out “Girls please let me in!”
After laughing hysterically at their mother's cries the girls had no problems going to sleep that night knowing their mother would be freezing outside.
The next morning the girls went outside to see their mother shivering on the front porch, she looked at them and said nothing, then walked inside. The girls snickered and said “Were you out there all night?” then followed her inside.
Mary and Jan were surprised when their mother continued to continue in silence throughout the day, which turned their focus towards their little sister.
“ Oh little sister...Where are you” Mary said in a sly whisper.
“Come out, come out, wherever  you are” said Jan as she searched the in the closet for their sister.
“What do you guys want?” She had finally said after giving up on hiding.
“Oh we just have a story for you” replied Mary
“No! Please no, you know your stories give me nightmares!
“Sit down and shut up!” yelled Jan
Because of the tone in Jan's voice and her fear of what Jan and Mary might do if she didn’t, the little sister quietly sat down on the bed and waited for them to begin the story.
Jan began by telling of a terrible creature that lurks under the bed and waits for its victims to get up through the night. When one dares to get out of bed the creature will reach its claws out and drag its screaming victim down into a dark, stewing, dungeon, where the creature will tear your insides apart and store your heart next to the rest.
The younger sister began to cry and ran to her mother.
The girl's mother calmly walked to the room, looked both girls in the eyes and said “You have one more chance.” then walked away.
Once again the girls thought nothing of their mother's warning and continued throughout the day.
Later that night the girls were called for dinner. Like usual, Mary and Jan complained about the food which their mother had prepared.
“This is disgusting! Why can’t you ever do anything right!” Jan screamed while throwing the food on the floor.
Jan and Mary continued to scream at, and verbally abuse their mother until they were completely worn out and decided to go to bed.
The two sisters had exhausted themselves from their tantrum that they quickly fell asleep in complete silence.
The next morning they woke up to a cold draft and were surprised that they had not been awaken throughout the night from their younger sister’s cries from her nightmares.
As Mary and Jan began to dress for the day they started to hear a clear thumping coming from the kitchen. It was load and the sisters wondered what it might be, so they walked into the kitchen...Sitting in a rocking chair, and facing the opposite direction of the girls, they saw a overgrown deformed woman, with mangled hair, and a long rat like tail that thumped up and down upon the cold wooden floor.
