Dear Future Self,
We turned eighteen today. Since learning that in Louisiana, you can become an adult at the age of 18, we had been anticipating this day. I now understand that we overhyped this one day out of the year when I sit back and think about it. What else has improved except the ability to be charged and tried as an adult and receive the worst penalties? We have decided to do everything in our power to enhance our physical and emotional health, making this weekend one we will never forget. When I turned 18, I mistakenly believed that my mental health would start to get better right away. However, I've since realized that I still need my mother's help. We wanted to grow up because of the misunderstanding between my father and myself. Our father is nothing more than a narcissist who struggles with reality. We wanted to become adults so we wouldn't have to answer to him, but I won't let a man who hasn't done much for me have such a big impact on me. I'm delighted to introduce the new and improved me, the person who won't stress about circumstances beyond my control, won't crumble under pressure and will accept things as they are without complaining. The hardest aspect of navigating this new phase of our lives will be acting on the change and putting in the necessary effort. I can only try to be realistic with myself; not blaming others, taking accountability, and controlling my overthinking are the first steps I’m going to take.
