"Mother's Day" by Esmé Kaplan-Kinsey is a fictional piece about a young boy, Milo, who made a mother's day themed mug. Howver, Milo's mother is not in his life anymore, so he decides he wants to make it for his father. Milo's father finds the mug and is distraught at it- his son is confused as he didn't intend for the mug to open healing wounds.

This piece was so poignant and touching to me. The innoncence of Milo, who is only seven, is only more heartbreaking as he questioned the fairness of how his classmates had no issues decorating their mother's day mug. I especially observed how Esmé made the father's inital reaction anger, because he just wanted to protect his son from feeling unhappy due to his loss of a mother.
