Tolerance Versus Acceptance
In the article, “Tolerance Versus Acceptance”, Marisa Paquette explains how acceptance requires much more than simply enduring a different view. Instead, acceptance is going way beyond that to actually welcome the opinion. It made me realize the concept of this article is something youth's counterparts, adults, still have not yet learned to grasp. As teens, we observe and reenact so much of the ignorance we see on television. We often forget the similarities between each other and what makes us a society. As an atheist, my belief, or lack thereof, should not have me segregated in society from religious believers. We often focus way too much on the negative aspects of our parents arguing over creationism and evolution. We get caught up in the mindset that whatever is not familiar to a person's self, should be considered invalid and must be promptly followed by a debate on why the other person is wrong. The theme that is conveyed in the story goes way beyond atheism vs. Christianity, but the notion that our youth should be taught to accept issues including LGBTQ, women's rights, and other ways of living life.
