“The Bumblebee Necklace” by Honor Ford is a sentimental and meaningful piece that I feel should be shared with other teens around the world. Honor was born with Cerebral Palsy which is a congenital disorder of movement, muscle tone, or posture due to abnormal brain development.  However, a special little bumblebee necklace somehow encourages her to keep going every day. Her mom and dad had given her the bumblebee necklace on her thirteenth birthday. She says, “Over the past four years, it has quickly become a staple of my personality and a sweet reminder on tough days.”
Honor’s memoir has inspired me greatly and I feel that it can have a huge impact on others who read her piece. I know that her story encourages me to appreciate myself for who I am and to stay positive when I go through those hard times. She has taught me that sometimes you will encounter gloomy days, and the fact of the matter is that everyone has insecurities. In Honor’s case, she had to deal with Cerebral Palsy disorder when transitioning into middle school. In her piece she says, “The bee necklace reminded me that with a little elbow grease, I could be just as capable as these new peers, and I didn’t have to be bothered by their stares.” She also says that her bee necklace forces her not to take the easy way out of things even though she has a disorder. She’s learned not to choose something just because it’s easier. I feel that this is great advice for kids to follow because it will make them stronger as a person, just like Honor Ford.
