The Wreching Ball of Society
Not even 100 Years ago a woman bearing her chest in public would be shunned from society. The world is evolving
quickly and not in all positive women are constantly being degraded.
The more our culture evolves, the more our world is being ruled by media and technology. A recent study by the CNBC says that in the year of 2012 the average teenager spent over 3 hours a day on social media. Social media has a huge impact on our lives whether it be magazines, television, cell phones, radio or computers there is no way to escape the media. Girls spend 4x more time on social media than boys.
Girls are therefore being exposed to the expectations of the media 4x more than
males. The media was originally a way to find out what is happening across the
world but is now more frequently used to tell us about the latest Hollywood
Gossip and is there to direct us into what we should look, dress and act like. If the
most famous and beautiful people in the world are dressing, acting and
looking a certain way well that’s probably what we should do too, right? Wrong.
Miley Cyrus originally known as the ex Hannah
Montana is famous worldwide with over 15 million followers on twitter,
instagram and likes on facebook. Miley Cyrus made her debut as Hannah
Montana on the Disney channel, a show based of the average life of a teenage girl
in junior high doubling as a superstar, the show targeted young girls ages 8-14, quickly she became one of the biggest stars of our generation and a worldwide inspiration for young girls. Recently Miley Cyrus released a new music video ‘’wrecking
ball’’. The video shows Miley Cyrus completely naked swinging back and forth on
a wrecking ball, licking a hammer and acting inappropriately. She
claims that the video was made to express her feelings towards her ex fiancée. The
video went viral in only a couple of hours, with over 22 billion views on YouTube.
This is the inspiration that these young girls are looking up too and this is
the kind of entertainment that
that the media is exploiting.
Teenage girls are indeed expected to look a certain way: skinny, but not too skinny, with big boobs and a big butt
with flawless skin, big bright eyes, full lips and shiny soft good smelling
hair, not too forget all the sexy appealing clothes, the tight leggings with
only a thong underneath because god forbid you have panty lines. Girls are
under an unbelievable amount of pressure to look a certain way, naturally beauty
is no longer an option and that’s why 82% percent of girls wear makeup,
that’s why girls aged as young as 6 are developing eating disorders and over half
of the female population are on diets. According to the American Society of
Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons over 219,000 girls under the age of 18 in
2008 got a certain type of surgery to improve their beauty. People are no longer
being measured on their personality but on their physical appearance.
Being comfortable in your own body is almost a rare concept and there is
always something that can be fixed.
