She was born on December 10, 1830. She began writing as a teenager. She studied botany. Her father worked at Amherst College. She died of kidney cancer on May 15, 1886.

She became a poet because Ben Franklin inspired her. William Wordsworth also inspired her . Leonard Humphery(Principal of Amherst Academy)had a great influence on her young active

She wrote more than 1000 poems during her lifetime There is in Amherst, Mass a museum named after her. One of the most prestigious awards a writer/poet can get is the PSA award named after her
