“O Romeo, O Romeo wherefore art thou Romeo?” (Act 2, Scene 2) This
quote was said when Juliet was questioning why Romeo was a Montague. She was
saying that if Romeo were to swear his love for her, she would stop being a Capulet. This
proves that Juliet just wanted to forget about the family feud, and love Romeo without
any fright. Although many people blame multiple characters for all of the deaths in
Romeo and Juliet, the family Feud between the Capulet’s and Montague’s caused many
characters to become quick-tempered, it caused unnecessary hate towards others, and it
made two lovers afraid to love.

Many characters in Romeo and Juliet were really quick-tempered because of the
family feud. One character that was really quick-tempered was Tybalt. All he ever
thought about was violence and hurting the Montague’s. “Uncle, this man is a Montague,
our foe, a villain that is hither come in spite to scorn at our solemnity this night.” (Act 1,
Scene 5) This quote is during that masquerade ball at the Capulet’s house. Tybalt spots
Romeo and all he can think about is fighting him because he is a Montague. In this scene
Lord Capulet has to calm down Tybalt. This proves that the feud is affecting some
people’s minds in the wrong way, which leads to irrelevant hate.

There is a lot of unnecessary hate because of the feud in Romeo and Juliet. There
are many examples of this unnecessary hate between the Capulet’s and Montague’s. The
characters just go out of their way to make the other family hurt. “Nay, as they dare. I
will bite my thumb at them, which is a disgrace to them, if they bear it. (bites his
thumb)”. (Act 1, Scene 1) This is one example of unnecessary hate. In this scene two
Capulet servants are joking around about the Montague’s. Then they run into two
Montague servants. One of the Capulet servants, Sampson, bites his thumb at one of the
Montague servants- Abram. In this time, biting your thumb is considered an insult. This
causes a fight. If they didn’t think they had to hate the other family because of the feud
this would have never happened. Since the two families felt like they had to hate each
other, Romeo and Juliet felt like they had to hide their love for each other.

Romeo and Juliet had to hide that they got married from their parents. They had to
hide that they got married because they knew about all of the unnecessary hate. They
were both willing to die for each other. Juliet wanted to kill herself if she had to marry
Count Paris. “If in thy wisdom thou canst give no help, do thou but call my resolution
wise, and with this knife I’ll help it presently.” (Act 4,Scene 1) When Romeo was
banished from Verona, meaning he would never get to see Juliet again, he wanted to die
because he couldn’t live with the fact that he would never see Juliet again. “Ha,
banishment! Be merciful, say “death,” for exile hath more terror in his look, much more
than death. Do not say “banishment.” (Act 3, Scene 3) Since they had to hide their
relationship because of the feud, Romeo and Juliet had to endure many circumstances
they shouldn’t have had to go through.

In conclusion, the family feud between the Capulet’s and the Montague’s caused
characters to feel like they had to hate each other, caused needless hate, and made two
lovers have to hide their relationship. At the end of Romeo and Juliet, when the two
families discover that their two children are dead they decide to end the feud. The two
families both lost their most loved child. The ending of the feud symbolizes forgiveness.
