The Potential Loss in Society
Everyday I find myself walking through the hallways within school, processing the faces I come across daily. Not only do I observe the constant familiar faces, but I also begin to notice the resemblance between everyone. I walk passed hundreds of people a day that I have not known before. As walking through the halls, I start to process the individuals I see. Not only do they share the same physical traits that others may possess, but I also notice that many look almost identical from their hair color to the clothes on their body. The situation is bizarre to think two people have the same physical features just like identical twins.
But, this represents a perfect example of natural cloning, not scientific manipulation to create clones. Throughout today’s society, cloning happens very naturally. Identical twins are just one example of how cloning is present within the world. Identical twins have the same exact DNA.
When viewing the future, the idea of cloning is looking to take a huge leap forward. While cloning can help parents hand pick their future child’s characteristics it may also harm the health of their child.
The idea of cloning took off in 1885 when a Sea Urchin was replicated. Since then, the ideas imagined have skyrocketed. It has become more than just choosing the gender of your child. It has now come to creating children for organs, children for work and just simply for the purpose of self selecting your future child.
Not only does the idea of cloning bring hazy thoughts to the public, but it also presents a lot of concerns that our future may hold. The futuristic take on cloning has turned many strong aspects into weaknesses. Not only has it attracted the medical careers in society, but has also brought attention to film production. The controversial topic of cloning has arose many opinions that led into movies. Replica, directed by Jeffrey Nachmanoff, aired recently in 2018, starring a scientist that resurrected his own family after a fatal car crash. In the movie, it brought up many issues with the clones and corporate, not knowing what was happening.
Cloning could be pursued in many different ways, but as looking into the future, the public may want to help customize their children to create the “perfect” child. According to Vittana Financial Blog, a website focused around the business aspect states, “ This would result in humanity becoming more susceptible to disease and deformity, requiring more genetic selection, because we would eventually be inbreeding with ourselves.” (vittana.org/11-advantages-and-disadvantages-of-cloning) The result of choosing the characteristics of our children would lead them to failure. The research also mentioned the loss of diversification that would be prevalent to society. Look at it this way; if everyone wanted to create the “perfect” child, the same traits would constantly be chosen. Parents would want a smart, athletic and attractive child. All kids wouldn’t need as much teaching because they were born with the same traits as every other person in their community. Yes, there might be some parents who have different physical traits and abilities in mind, but the majority will strive for those top three.
As the new generation attends school, they will have the same style, look the same way and learning all in the same way. Since the new children will have the same physical traits, or similar, they will also share many of the same genes. What does this mean? It means like previously stated in the research that diseases can spread. When a disease is started, it can be caused because of the genes in the body. If this is the case, all of the new generation will start to attract the disease because of the similar genes.
Not only will the loss of diversification affect the general public health, but also the value of human health will be depreciated. Today, life is irreplaceable and cannot be returned, but with cloning, you may be able to clone your loved one back to life. This is changing the whole idea of living your life, because many may be cloned to live longer. This is shown in the movie Replica. The main character resurrected his whole family back to life. Not only does this question morals, but also creates many wonders in human culture.
To all negatives come positives. More research from The Center of Bioethics and Dignity stated, “Other clones could be produced with unusually high or low mental capacities that would suit them well to do socially needed tasks, for example, challenging problem solving or menial labor” (cbhd.org/content/human-cloning) If certain tasks were not able to be completed, clones could be produced to help finish it.
Although this may seem like an excellent idea at first, as you look deeper, you can start to notice the unfavorable effects this may have on ones community.. Once an individual is potentially cloned, they will eventually understand their purpose in life is perform tasks that humans are not able to complete. This will create a huge debate within the world on, once again, the true meaning of life. As you continue to dive deeper, you can begin to realize the fast moving pace of the world. We are constantly trying to “better” the nation, but in reality, it is causing the world to take a step backwards. If a task is to difficult for humans to complete, the public clearly is not ready for that job. Bringing clones into the world to finish what we humans can not, then the purpose of that task should not be necessary.
Having an access to cloning will turn the future into a huge mess. With the debate of life and genetic diseases, the whole idea of cloning is ready for a gigantic disaster with society once its time comes.
I continue to walk through the hallways, noticing every aspect of the individuals I pass. I notice the group of four teenage girls, wearing airpods, birkenstocks and flannels as they aggressively chew their gum from one class to another. I also notice the two twins walking with one another, trying to catch up within the short six minutes they are given in between classes and I think to myself, We are already similar to our peers around us, how much similar will the world be with cloning?

"The Potential Loss in Society" is a personal essay based around cloning. I am a high school student viewing the world as too much motion, and only want for everyone to slow down, take a step back and realize the speed they are attempting to go at, until they fail.
