My Name

My name is Will. It comes from the German name Wilhelm. The first half of the German name, Wil, comes from “will”. The second half of the German name, helm, comes from “protection”. The will to protect. In English, William means “resolute protector” or “strong willed warrior”, so the name has great honor in both the German and English languages.

Will also is a commonly used word. How can one name mean resolute protector and also be used everyday with questions that have nothing to do with the actual name itself? Like if someone asks me “will you be there tonight?” I think about my name before I think about the actual question itself. I'm not saying I dislike my name, but I do dislike the fact that with different context it can be used as a normal word that doesn't have the same significance.

I like the name Will. It's short, solid, and simple. If someone asks me my name I don’t have to repeat it. If someone is reading my name they will always read it correctly. It may be a common name but it is a recognizable name.

Resolute protector. The name Will sounds strong like a brick wall or solid like hardened cement. The name is short and solid which is why it reminds me so much of these stronger things. But I don’t really feel like a protector. I have people and things I care about, but it's not like I'm protecting them everyday and every hour.

Maybe resolute protector doesn’t refer to constant protection. Maybe it just means you’re there for people to help them when they need you, like how I have my friends' backs and I will take their sides in situations where they need me.

I think of my name like a US dollar. It is common, I wish it had more value in some cases, and it will have different worths to different people or different values in different situations, but to me my name will always be worth something.
