The Gift That Follows

I wake up every day the same, get out of bed, wash my face, get dressed, and leave for the day. My mornings start out gloomy, still trying to wake up. I go off to school and see all my friends and teachers, a bit more awake than I was before. Class starts and someone cracks a joke, laughter fills the room. For the rest of the day, laughter follows me. Trying to make myself, or someone else, smile. Laughter comes with me everywhere, it feels like a weight lifted off my shoulders, it brightens my day and fills me with joy. I can’t go anywhere without it or else a piece of me is gone.

My parents always told me that ever since I was little, my sister and I could always make everyone laugh. From the oblivious things we said, to the funny jokes we would plan out. My sister is the funniest person I know, although I might also be biased because she gets all her jokes from me. No matter what, she knows how to make me laugh. Laughter cures my sadness, my anxiousness, and my anger. I guess you could say it is my coping mechanism. I might be nervous or upset, but you would never notice. I act like things don’t get to me, I put a smile on my face and laugh about it. That's the only way I learn how to get over the difficult things that I go through, make fun of myself for it.

Ever since I could remember she’s always been there. The same hazel eyes, rosy cheeks, and blonde hair, identical to mine. I have spent every day of my life with her. She knows me, and I know her, better than anyone ever will. She is only seven minutes younger than me, but I will always be the older one. She is one of the most kind-hearted people I know, always nice to everyone around her, even when they aren’t to her. When she lets people walk all over her, I will always be there to pick her up. I will always be there to take care of her, when she can’t take care of herself. I can always count on her to listen to my problems and come up with solutions. I can always count on her to take my side. I can always count on her to make me laugh when I want to cry. She is my soulmate and I can’t imagine my life without her.

Laughter has helped me find who I am. Without it, my life would be so different. I would have my bubbly personality, I wouldn’t have a way to cure my sadness, and I wouldn’t have the bond I share with my friends and family. Laughter was able to make me the person I am today. So thank you to laughter. Thank you for turning some of my worst days into some of the best, for helping me learn not to take life so seriously, and for helping me experience life to its fullest. I hope that I will never loose my sense of humor and that laughter will always follow me.
