Don't hide your feelings. Write about them instead!

It was an ordinary summer night. I was working on my essay at the dinner table, and my dad was unpacking groceries after a long day at work.

吃一个橘子吧。

"Have an orange," my dad said.

我不饿。

"I’m not hungry," I replied.

I went back to typing. My dad frowned.

我这次买的很甜,你吃一个吧。

"The tangerines I bought this time are really sweet, you should eat one," he said.

我已经说我不要了。

"I already told you I don’t want one," I said, slightly irritated.

But my dad was persistent. He kept insisting that I eat the tangerine.

I was also stubborn. I kept refusing him.

Eventually, he had to go to sleep, so he left the tangerine next to my laptop.

When I finished my essay, I cleared the table and began packing up for school. While packing, I caught sight of the tangerine. I looked at the time. It was 3:06 AM.

Despite refusing my dad so many times, I decided to eat the tangerine.

The funny and perhaps ironic thing is that he was right. The tangerine was really sweet.

Growing up, the only thing I wanted to hear was "I'm proud of you" and receive a pat on my head. But this never happened, as my parents do not show affection that way. This always frustrated me but I think I've come to understand it over time. Through food, they are showing love in the only way they know how to.
