“You can get this guy Raechal, you’re just as experienced as he is.” My coach explained, trying to motivate me. “Just think about what you have to do, remember all the moves you’re good at. You can do this.” He said grabbing my shoulders and shaking me lightly.
I was determined, I stood there until my match, thinking of my best move and going through anything that might happen. I imagined that moment when the referee’s hand slaps the mat as I got my first pin. I repeat the thought over and over in my head, until finally I heard my name being called. I got my headgear on and headed to my match.
I strolled onto the mat assuming my position. The whistle blew and we are off, fighting for dominance. Finally the moment I’ve been waiting for and working for. I wrap my arm under his armpit and my other arm around his head as I step forward pushing him onto his back. I get on my toes pushing all my weight through my chest to his, holding him down. His shoulders touch the mat once, twice, three times and four. I could hear yelling, but I couldn’t make out anyone’s voice, and before I knew it the first period was over. No pin.
I was exhausted, light headed, and out of breath. I had to do it. I still had the chance to pin this kid. I get into my wrestling stance, but this time it’s more sluggish, he shoots I sprawl
just like before, but more sluggish once again. I try to flip him onto his back. I just don’t have the strength. I fall onto my back and he gets the pin.
My opponent and I shook hands, the referee raising my opponents hand… not mine. I continued on with the usual, shaking the other coaches’ hand and walking back to my coaches. Something was different this time. Anger was boiling inside me I looked at my coaches then to my wrestling buddy.
“Good job.” Said my sister, that’s all it took. I exploded throwing my headgear to the ground and running to my friend crying all over her wrestling uniform. My friend walked me to the bathroom and cleaned me up and calmed me down. After I went back into the gym I was greeted by my coach. “You did really good I’m proud of you.” He said giving me a hug.
