Dinosaur Head

In 6th grade my art grade was saved by a dinosaur head. We were carving alabaster pendants and mine was supposed to be an arrow. Unfortunately I had decided to mess around with it and it hit my friend Ethan’s head; it shattered and my arrow was suddenly gone.

Because my pendant had shattered I had to get a new stone to carve so I went to the alabaster bin and looked through the stones to try and find a new one to carve. At the very bottom I saw a stone that was almost the exact same shape as a T Rex Head, so I grabbed it and went to my seat. I looked at the stone and realized it had marks for teeth on one side so I got a small file and smoothed them out so that they would be easily visible.

The stone was rough around the edges so I filed it until the edges were smooth enough that they wouldn't fall apart and went to drill an eyehole.  We had a drill press in the classroom but it seemed like the entire class had decided to drill a hole that day so I had to wait until after class to drill.

If you stayed after class to clean up, the art teacher, Mrs. Penzien, would give you candy, so I never complained about staying even though it did take about ten minutes of my lunch time to put all the supplies back. I brought my dinosaur head up to the drill press and gave it to her after showing her where I wanted the eye to be. She didn't show much expression when she saw the pendant, but I’m pretty sure I saw her smile.

When I got my grade back a week or so later I saw that I had gotten a 15/10 which was really helpful to my grade and got me back up to an A. Mrs. Penzien told me that she was going to keep my pendant in the classroom for next quarter’s kids to see and that she would give it back and the end of the year.

In June I went to her room to get the pendant but it wasn’t there. Mrs. Penzien wasn't in the room so I decided to come back later and ask her where it was. As I was walking out of her class I heard someone say my name and I turned around and saw Mrs. Penzien walking towards me. I asked her where the pendant was and she smiled and told me that she had sent it to the art fair and that I could go see later in the summer. I smiled and thanked her for the surprise.

Later that summer, I went with my family to the art fair and after an hour and a half of looking for it, I found my pendant and took it home with me. When I got home gave the pendant to my mom and she hung it on a hook in the living room where it would hopefully not fall. My sister had been wanting to hold the pendant this whole time and I wouldn't let her so as soon as I had left the room I heard her run over to the hook and take the pendant off. I ran back into the room and she dropped the pendant in shock, it broke clean across the jaw and all of my hard work was gone. My first reaction was to pick it up and see if I could glue it back together but the glue would be obviously seen and would look horrible, the alabaster was also very soft and would not hold very well. All I could do was stare at the two pieces and think what would have happened if I had not left the room.
