Many people experience a time in their life where everything is perfect. You have the ability in that one moment to forget everything. Everything that stresses you out, anything school related vanishes from you mind. You feel infinite although, this is a rare feeling. The experience is the healthy version of a high. This moment does not have to happen in places like luxurious Hawaii or on the beach. It can happen anywhere. Feeling infinite can happen anywhere, even in places like your friend’s basement.

It was an average Saturday night, and I had plans to hang out with my friends. Nothing special, just a normal get together. Our December break had just begun, and all of my schoolwork was complete for the vacation. We started out the evening just playing around his house. We ordered food and watched some TV. My friend has a large backyard with a lake in the back. Around the lake, there are at least a dozen houses. Part of the water was frozen around the edges. It was not insanely cold outside, but probably around forty degrees outside. At this point, the sky was pitch black, and the stars illuminated the Earth. His backyard is split into sections. One part was the play area, where there are various nets sets up for lacrosse and soccer. On the other half was the chill area where there are four wooden lounge chairs set up around a fire pit. This is where we went. We all took our places around the pit and got comfortable.

After about five minutes we realized there was no fire. So, we dispersed to the mini forest to find some wood. We came back and set up a pile of wood, only putting the driest ones in the pit. The other pieces were set aside, so that they could be used later. We got a lighter from inside the house, and lit the wood. Almost instantly an obnoxious roar erupted from the flames. The fire climbed its way around the logs, quickly eating up the twigs and leaves. It must have reached at least three feet. The only word I could use to describe it was mesmerizing. I got fixated on the fire, not being able to tear my eyes away from it. No matter how I tried, my eyes were glued to that one position. Then we began to talk, just talk. We talked about things that happened in school, what people fought, and what was happening in the sports world.

In the middle of our conversation, I began to feel happy. I could not explain the feeling. I know I can use a better than happy, but happy is the purest word. No other word can describe it. I use the word happy because any other feeling would be too specific. Happy is the most general term of it’s synonyms. I felt like everything in my life was going to be okay. There was nothing to worry about anymore. It was as if the world stood still and we were the only ones moving. In the book, The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, the main character Charlie, was riding through a tunnel with his new best friends. Charlie had never felt more exhilarated before.

The author used a word to describe that moment. The word was so little, but could tell a story. He used the word infinite. It was that night after discussing being infinite in class, that I realized infinite was the word that described my feeling that night at my friend’s house. Charlie’s moment and mine were very similar. I have felt this way many times, but could never describe it. I always called it that one moment. Feeling infinite is not something you can explain. Not even an author can do it. Tat feeling is something you have to experience. There is no “how do you know when you feel infinite?” questions. It is something that can be recognized right away. I can say that I felt infinite, and there is nothing better.

The author's comments:

This is a moment that is always in my mind. It reminds me of a happy time in my life when I am depressed.
