Unrequited "Love"

Joseph was a rich farm boy, accustomed to having what he wanted.  Women had been plentiful in his life.  However, his new obsession was that of a pure, chaste woman, one not interested in the temptations of the body. This woman was captivating. He admired the fullness of her lips, and the reflection of purity in her eyes. In his dreams, he lusted after her every curve, and the innocence in her movements.  Her uncorrupted mind and her smart personality was what attracted him most.  Her name was Alma.
She, on the other hand, was truly in love with him.  But she couldn’t come to accept him and his way of living, as he had lived with another woman, Lola, for three years, bearing two children. Not

wanting to share a house or husband with another woman, Alma rejected Joseph’s advances, making it clear that a relationship between the two of them would be forced and full of misery.
The idea was transfixed in Joseph’s head that Alma was to be his wife, no one else, regardless of the situation with Lola.  He lusted after Alma in a way that made life without her nearly unimaginable.  His compulsiveness led to a series of events that would change their lives.
Sunday came a week after Alma rejected Joseph, and he seized her as she was walking home from church with her sister.  She was shoved into the backseat of his car, with the help of two of his friends.  Kicking and screaming, Alma managed to hit one of them in the head with her heel, knocking him unconscious.  Frustrated with how she was struggling, Joseph turned and struck her across the face. She lay still.
Joseph drove until they reached their safe house, where he nursed Alma back to health, while at the same time continuing make attempts at pushing their relationship forward. Joseph tempted her with the ideas of the bedroom and the feelings that are aroused when two people are alone in that context, but she remained resilient.  She kept her purity through the days she was held, knowing deep down that once she was out, to save herself from the scrutiny of her village, she would have to marry him.  Little did she know, her family would’ve been willing to take her away, to another state, country even, to protect her from the eyes and judgements of those who lived around them.  But as this path was not clear to her, she took the one she thought to be safest. She married the man that would abuse her, emotionally, physically and mentally, tearing her apart, and eventually ruining their children.  Joseph had what he’d wanted, a doll to use and play with, and Alma could do nothing to defend herself.  She allowed it all to happen, not taking any steps to become more independent, afraid that in doing so she’d be hurt in some way or another.  Alma did her best to cope and to provide for her children, but she never got around to understanding that she’d been dealt a difficult set of cards, but she wasn’t willing to learn how to play the right game.
