Plunders in the Snow

“Come on Eddie, you are holding us up!” I call to him.

“Okay okay, I’m coming,” he responds.

I see him slowly making his way down in and around the moguls. Me and our instructor, Scott, a guy from Tulsa, Oklahoma who enjoyed chili and good skiing, had been waiting patiently at the bottom for a couple minutes and we were already exhausted from the day.

“Ah, there you are, we were getting worried,” I sigh with relief.

“Yeah, you all right Ed?” Scott questions.

“I’m good, just had a little fall up there,” he exclaims as he pointed up to one of the moguls.

“Alright, let us keep going, we want to get down by closing time,” Scott mutters. We follow him down to a tree run that is fun but intimidating considering the pitch. I am in the front of the group, Scott in the middle, and Eddie in the back.

“Why have you stopped?” Eddie howls from up above.

“There is a gigantic and scary rock here,” I return.

I slowly start to make my way around the rock and made my down to a small landing spot, I slowed down and look up at Scott and Eddie to make sure they will get around it okay. Scott has no problems getting around it, considering that he has skied this mountain many times over. Eddie, on the other hand, has little bit more trouble. He is taking his time just like I did but he rounds over the rock instead of around it like I had. He slides down it, loses control and hits his butt on a smaller rock on the side of the trail.

“Ed, you all good? That was your second fall in a few minutes!” Scott yells in Eddie’s direction immediately.
Eddie does not respond. Scott takes off his skis to go walk up to Eddie. I do the same. We are both worried about Eddie because he looks like he was in serious pain.

“It is okay guys, just got a little bruise,” Eddie exclaims as he tries to hide a grimace.

We are very relieved that he was okay, the fall looks like it hurt a lot. Luckily, there are not many people going down this trail at the time so we can take our time making sure Eddie is okay.

“Guys, I’m okay I swear,” he says as Scott and I heave him up. “I can still make it down on my own.”

Last year, I had a similar experience to Eddie’s, this year, we decided to give ourselves a challenge and go on a black diamond. It was full of moguls which gave all of us some chills. It was covered in moguls which gave us some chills, we did not like moguls very much.We all took it gingerly and made different paths around the trail. I was last in the group so they were all looking up at me as I inched down. Suddenly, I started to lose control and sped over and around moguls. I slid down the trail out of control and skidded to a halt on the ground within five feet of hitting the ski lift.

“Hey man, are you okay?” A man yelled down from the ski lift.

“Yeah,” I groaned. I was the one with the Gopro on my chest luckily so all of this was on video many times that night.

After Eddie's rock incident, we make sure that we are going down very safe trails to conserve Eddie’s health.. We stop a couple times just to make sure that he is okay. We got back to the hotel, Scott walks us to our condo just to make sure that Eddie is all good. Scott feels very bad that Eddie got hurt under his watch. Being our coach for four years, he trusts us and we trust him even more.

“Please tell us the story!” exclaims my sister, Charlotte, to me after Eddie says that he would not tell it.

“Fine,” I concede “but only if you give your full attention.”

I tell the whole story to my family as they lean forward on the couch. As I explain to them what happened, Eddie gets red in the face. I can see them trying to conceal a laugh for Eddie’s sake. We all remember when my dad sat down on a trail, got a cramp and could not get up because of it. We talk about “Eddie’s Bruised Butt” story all night.
