It was a three-period self-study. The first-grade class is surprisingly quiet; even breathing in the room was apparent. I could feel the rustle of two dozen pens hitting the paper. I stared at the application form on the desk and resolutely put my name down to run for Student Union president.

Everyone peeped at each other's forms to see what position they wanted to run for, and they laughed when seeing mine because the school did not allow students to run for the board positions before their senior year, not to mention the president.
 
I needed this position to fix the problems in this school, where students' needs were not seen, and many suffered from mental health issues. I wanted to make our school a better place. Simple as that.
 
No one thought it was possible. And the result was no surprise.
 
When I received the rejection letter, the anger was tinged with frustration. I went to the teacher in charge to ask why he denied me without giving me an interview opportunity and why he denied a person's ability without knowing anything about it. The teacher replied, "We do not accept first-year students to run for the presidium." I left the office with a heart filled with disobedience and decided to break the age "curse."
 
I began to observe the daily work of the Student Union, paying attention to the teachers' management of the Student Union and the student's evaluation of the Union. I found the student union was more like an organization that assists teachers in managing activities rather than striving for student's benefits, which distanced student union and the students more. I recorded all observations and told the school officials about them when I ran for the presidium in the second year. I pointed out that the student union should be a team that focuses on students' interests and quality of life instead of just following teachers' instructions. I also told the story of my first year as a joke. But I know it's not a joke.

My speech received a turnout of 80%, and I became the only non-senior student to enter the presidium in the second year of junior high school. The student union had the highest application rate that year. It was from then on that I became obsessed with "reform." Courage may fail me once, but if there is an indomitable spirit, there will be brilliance eventually.
