The future

On my first day as camp counselor, I was thrilled to meet my campers. I anticipated playing games, doing arts and crafts, and enjoying the summer. However, to my surprise, I walked in to meet Alex, a camper with Autism. As the summer progressed, I noticed how other children treated Alex. When Alex got mad, he had trouble expressing his feelings; so he resorted to screaming or violence. Alex’s campmates often laughed at him and excluded him from activities. Watching these children interact, I realized what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. Now my goal is to help children who cannot help themselves. Alex did not ask for Autism; however, he lives everyday suffering from it. While no one can fix Alex’s brain, through the help of doctors and therapists, Alex can assimilate to today’s society and still live happily. I want to be a pediatric psychiatrist to help people like Alex and any child who cannot speak up for themselves. Just as St. Ignatius encourages, I want to devote my life to serving others. I am incredibly grateful for my health and blessings, and I want to take those blessings and apply them to something important and impactful. Ultimately, every child deserves to be treated equally; however, some children do not benefit from this opportunity. I want to use my talents and education to fight for equality for children who cannot fight for it themselves.
