Who Am I?
"Who am I?" It's a question that we all ask ourselves in life. It seems to be one of the most difficult questions life has to offer us. We can sit and think about what the answer may be for hours and still! No matter how hard you try, you can't seem to place your finger on the answer. I was clueless! I though to myself, "How am I supposed to find the answer, if I don't even understand the question?" I never knew if it's what people saw in me or what they thought. Turns out, the answer is simple. It was there all along, standing right there before my eyes. You seem it wasn't what people saw in me... but whats I saw in myself.
Every morning for years, I stared into the mirror asking myself what I saw. My answer was always the same, "Just you staring back at yourself, of course." That's where I went wrong. I never looked at who I was or what I thought of myself. I always saw myself from everyone else's eyes, and not my own. Eventually I grew tired of asking the same reflection in the mirror the same question over and over, only to receiver the same answer in return. Seeing the beauty the world has to offer is the key.
One sleepless night, I wandered into the back yard and lay down on my hammock. As I stared up at the stars, I quickly realized that I wasn't looking at it the same way that I normally would. Usually, on any other midnight stroll, I would just see the plain night sky with stars randomly placed. But on this particular night, I didn't just see the night sky. I didn't just see the stars. I saw a black sky, as if it were painted on a canvas with all the passion God has placed in the world. A black canvas that had been decorated with the most spectacular and the most beautiful display of stars. The stars seemed to come alive that night, as they flickered and danced to the music of the Earth. In that moment, they seemed to have given the world a light that could never fade for our generation and for those to come.
Later that night, I looked in the mirror and saw the same reflection staring back at me. Only this time, my reflection no longer looked like me at all. In its eyes, I saw hope, hope as bright as the stars I had just seen. I stared at this new reflection, try to pin-point why I looked different. After a while, I asked the reflection once more, the same question I asked every morning. "Who am I?" My reflection replied, "You are beautifuol, you are kind, you are smart, and you... are you. You are your own person and who you chose to be. Don't see yourself from eyes that don't belong to you. See yourself for who you are; see what you are on the inside, not for what others see inside you."
"Who am I?" is a question that we can't always answer. It seems to be one of the difficult questions life has to offer us. I has asked myself this question for years, and every morning I would get the same answer. Until one night, I saw everything differenty, including myself. Now when I ask myself the same question... "Who am I?" I finally have an answer. I am beautiful, I am smart, I am intelligent, and I am me. The answer is simple, all you have to do is take a step back and see the beauty in everything.
