The Power of Comedy
I have always been one to hold many different and complex beliefs, beliefs which are thought-out and strong because of it. One of these is centered around comedy, and the power it can have. This power is something I have personally seen many times in my life. I have found it to be something that can change anyone and everyone. Comedy holds a unique power that can do incredible things. With comedy, comes laughter; with laughter comes amazing things
The many values I have with comedy shape how I approach it. These basic things are how I know I have accomplished comedy: I have made myself laugh and/or I have made another laugh. Both of these hold value and are great things which can shape a person in amazing ways, even if only for a moment.
Comedy is most often looked at as making another laugh, but I know that if I can make myself laugh, I have done a great thing. It holds the same value as if I make another laugh. Laughter is a powerful tool which can be used to positively impact a person in many ways. Sometimes, I need to laugh. Sometimes, I’ve had a bad day. Sometimes, I have a negative attitude. Sometimes, I just want to give up. Laughter can change these things. There are times when I will tell a joke and whether or not I make anyone else laugh is irrelevant. Sometimes, I just need to cheer myself up. I do it through comedy. I need only say the right thing and I can turn a bad day right-side up.
Making others’ lives better, even if only for a moment, is a gift unlike any other. It is a way that we, as seemingly insignificant beings, can have an impact. Comedy has shown me that I can always have an impact, and even if it is small, I should do it. I have been blessed with the ability to cause laughter, so I should take advantage of it. This is my way of positively impacting the world. Laughter creates a unique kind of happiness. It is one that can occur no matter what state a person is in. Even on the worst of days, laughter can cause happiness. When nothing else can, laughter can cause happiness. Comedy is a powerful natural resource which can never be used up.
My experience with comedy has changed my life. As a member of my high school improv team, I have had the opportunity to make very many people laugh. Often, during my shows, I reminisce just after hearing the laughter I have just caused. In my head, I think about how much happiness I have been able to cause. I think about how a few words can have a large impact. The lights, causing a glare in vision that keeps me from seeing the audience, allow me to focus on the beautiful song I hear. The laughter rings beautifully in my ears, and I know that my small impact was a great one.
Comedy is an incredible thing. The power which it holds is unlike any other. With the ability to utilize it, I can have a great impact on so many people. I believe in the power of comedy, because every positive impact, no matter how small, is worth the effort.
