And…..GOOOOOAAALL! You, the coach, finally got the shyest boy on the team to score his very first goal in the last game of the season. The crowd is going crazy for the kid and mostly you for giving him the confidence to go score. The coach is so happy that he had a successful year with his team and that everyone on his team got to score at least one goal. To cap it all off, he decides to take his team out for ice cream for their hard work. And just like that the season is over but just how did he get this far for his first time as a coach. There are so many answers to just one question.

First of all, being a first time coach of soccer or any sport can be overwhelming and can give you goosebumps. But the main thing to do in this situation is to relax and stick to your game plan. Everyone knows that you are going to be nervous on your first day. There expectations for you are very high and so your job is to meet or go beyond them. However, most coaches do meet them until the very end of the season. So until then you job is to build up to it while teaching the kids the sport and how to play it. Coaching can be overwhelming because of the responsibility and leadership of your team. If it is your first time being a coach ask other coaches who have coached for a long time for any tips to a successful year.

One of the most important rules to being a coach is to respect others as well as yourself. Be nice to your team and the parents so you can gain their respect. It is all about gaining experience in this new field of expertise. If you always are being a jerk or mean with the kids in practice then two things are going to happen. One is that the kid will despise or be afraid of you for the rest of the season or two the parents will think you are an inadequate coach and drop his or her kid from your team and now you have to manage with one less person. Not to mention that the word will get around that you were so disrespectful to a child that he or she quit the team. So you definitely don’t want to end up like that. Just know your limits with the team, manage what you have, and you will be fine.
I know that being a coach involves hard work but something you have to do that will make the season amazing is to have fun and enjoy yourself and the team. During practice you can add a fun game at the end so that the kids can go home feeling happy. Be optimistic with ideas of certain activities you want to do so you have an open mind. Try and get the team and the parents to see what an impressive coach you really are. Get everyone an equal chance to play and just go with the flow.

Overall just be yourself, don’t be a jerk, and have lots of fun. So hopefully these tips to being a great coach will help all the first time coaches have a great year and tell other on how you were able to accomplish your expectations and then pretty soon they will learn to and do the same to others and the cycle repeats and repeats. Experience will help and take people a long way. Also these tips do not only revolve around soccer but for all sports around the world. So if you are the new coach in the park these tips will get you anywhere!
