It’s a sad rainy Monday, you’re choosing an outfit for the next day. Do you go for black or yellow to feel better about the day? Many people attribute yellow to happiness, red to anger, white to peacefulness, etc. And for the most part that makes sense, yellow is the color of the sun, a bright happy symbol. A person's face might get red under pressure or when upset. But is that actually true? Can wearing a particular color in your outfit change your mood and perspective on your day? With these findings, a person could wear a specific color on a Monday, or on a rainy sad day to make them feel better. Or maybe a new color could be worn to funerals that actually prove are associated with sadness not just black.

46 people were asked at the end of the day what color shirt they were wearing and how they felt. Were they happy, neutral, mad, tired, energized, etc.?

From the data these were the majority moods for each color:

Red: 50% were happy

Blue: .375% were happy

Yellow: 100% were happy

Pink: tied 50-50 with happy and energized

White: .46% happy

Black: .55% neutral

Gray: .33% neutral

Green: 100% neutral

These statistics and percentages both supported and went against color stereotypes. For example, even though red is seen as a color of anger and rage, the majority of people wearing it feel happy. On the other hand, yellow is seen as happy and uplifting, and every person wearing it felt happy. One must keep in mind the bias that could come with this data. There are many inconveniences and factors that could impact a person's mood by the end of the day. Also, when collecting data, I asked everyone outside at the end of the day. Now that the weather is getting nicer and the sun is out, it could have changed people's response.  Additionally, because I only had 46 respondents the data isn’t as varied or accurate as a data collection that could have contained hundreds of people, with various types of days. My overall takeaways are that for an energized happy day it’s best to wear yellow, pink, red, or white. For neutral days a person might want to wear black, grey, or white.

I created this piece for a project at school where I had to choose a bivariate topic. I choose this because I'm curious how color affects mood, because sometimes I notice how if I'm wearing a brighter color I end up happier at the end of the day.
